LegalSmash Posted December 7, 2008 Content Count: 2936 Joined: 02/04/08 Status: Offline Share Posted December 7, 2008 I walked into gamestop, credit card in hand to purchase my birthday gift from my grandmother (her idea, because she's awesome and knows I'm a voracious gamer), Resistance 2 on the PS3. I wanted to buy it used if it was available to save the 4-5 dollars I would for an essentially new game that some tard traded in at 45% value to buy the next flavor of the month. When I arrive at the PS3 used wall, I am approached by the employee, a short, fat, obviously socially inept 16 year old with bad acne that looks like cottage cheese who asks me if I require assistance. I inform him I wish to buy resistance 2 used, and the conversation goes something like this: (Spoiler: he didnt get a sale) Me: Hey, I'd like to purchase a used copy of resistance 2, do you have any in stock? Douche: I do, but I can't sell it to you... its the law. Me: (puzzled) Oh? Why? Douche: Cuz its the law, I have to hold all used games at least 18 days before I can sell them to someone. Me: Who passed this law? Is this company policy? Douche: (self righteously and annoyed with me) No! Its a Law!! I can't sell it to you. Me: Who passed this law? Why haven't I heard of such a law? Douche: Why would you have? Me: I'm a lawyer, I'm interested, so tell me, who passed this law? Is your manager here? I find it somewhat comical that I cannot buy a used copy of a game and that a law was passed requiring you to hold a game for 18 days, yet there are no signs clearly stating said policy or law. Douche: (Balls somewhere in throat) Wait, I can't sell it cuz people are stealing from Target and reselling them here... and I have to verify these games weren't stolen... Me: How do you verify this information? Douche: The back barcode..... Me: You mean the barcode that only codes price? Try a little harder than that man, I've never worked retail and I know that you can't find purchaser lineage info from that. Either way, I'd like to ask your manager about this policy, it seems kind of arbitrary to me, and if I can I'd like to get my game before the store closes. Douche: There arent any managers here... Me: So I guess it leaves me little choice but to buy the game new huh....? Douche: Yea, do you want me to charge credit or cash? Me: Oh, I'm not buying it here, I'm going to target. Douche: Why? Me: Well, its obvious that either your store has a severe problem crime and is fencing stolen property, or you have a restrictive policy which prevents me from buying a game used so I have to purchase it new, despite you having used copies for sale, or you are just a very poor liar and used the wrong "its the law" schpiel on the wrong person. Either way, I'm going to take my money, and business elsewhere. Douche:But you are already here... do you really want to walk across the street to target? Me: Do you want to call your manager for me so that I can verify said policy? Douche (doesn't say anything) Me: I'll take that as a no, so have a good one. Douche: I have call of duty 4... (I leave... go buy my game from the indian guy at target). Link to comment

Pancake Batter Posted December 7, 2008 Content Count: 672 Joined: 03/20/07 Status: Offline Share Posted December 7, 2008 (edited) I stopped buying my games from Gamestop a long time ago when they tried to sell me 3 games as new when they were obviously used. I remember asking to see the disc before buying it (like I always do with stores that take the disc out of the boxes and keep them somewhere else), the game had this huge scratch on the side along with fingerprints all over it. I told the girl that I wasn't going to pay 50 clams for an obviously used/mishandled game, then the stupid bitch had the gall to get up in my face and go "Can't you read?! The box says new!" Then she proceed to use her nails and scratch around the previous huge scratch that was on the disc and goes "this game still plays fine!" I was like fuck that and went on my way. This shit happens 2 more times when I went to buy Makai Kingdom and Odin Sphere. I have also heard that Gamestop employees are allowed to take home new games, play it, then bring it back and still sell it new. Needless to say, I buy my games online; no bullshit and online retailers don't try to make me buy stupid subscriptions to shitty gaming magazines each time I want to buy something. Chêvouÿx Posted December 7, 2008 Content Count: 1079 Joined: 04/21/08 Status: Offline Share Posted December 7, 2008 I had something like that about 3-4 years ago.... I was getting "Republic Commandos" when it had just come out for $50 as usual. I had the money in my hand, went in the store, and grabbed the game. When I brought it up to the counter, the cashier disregarded me. About 10 people were served before he even gave me an eye glance. When he did finally talk to me, he asked me why "such a little brat would want to buy a video game since they're only for adults." I ignore him and hand him the game with my money in view within my hand. He then gives me some excuse that I can't purchase it because the rating is higher then my age. (I was 12 with my dad nearby, so there ws no law restricting me from buying the game) My dad walks up, asks the guy want the problem is, and he tells my dad that I don't have sufficent amounts of money to purchase the game and I tried to steal it in the first place. We ended up buying the same game for $5 less at Wal-mart because they had sale... and it only took about 3-5 minutes, too. Link to comment

The ESRB rating can be used to stop you from purchasing, and unless your parent is the purchaser, its not technically wrong though. As for the comments regarding theft, etc. they were completely uncalled for, but again, I don't expect much from this caliber of employee. Coffee Crisp Posted December 7, 2008 Content Count: 4960 Joined: 06/20/07 Status: Offline Share Posted December 7, 2008 (edited) EB Games (A subsidiary of gamestop/Canadian version of it) is no different, which to me is really sad. That's why I only go there for the special offers which at most times the employees don't know two shits about and give me the "Give me your number and we'll call you" excuse which never really happens. Other than that it's Staples, Best Buy, or in extreme cases Walmart... Edited December 7, 2008 by Coffee Crisp Link to comment
Frostbyte Posted December 7, 2008 Content Count: 2750 Joined: 07/17/08 Status: Offline Share Posted December 7, 2008 Where I live, there is a Gamestop right next to a wal-mart. The people that work at my local gamestop are really nice. When I went to pick up Gears of War 2, I was halfway out the door when the guy said, 'WAIT, YOU FORGOT YOUR GOLDEN HAMMERBURST CODE'. I guess he had extras, and thought I went to the midnight launch. And if Gamestop dosen't have my game in stock, I walk over to wal-mark to watch middle-aged women beat their kids because they want the skittles and the snickers. Link to comment
