Toxin Posted January 13, 2009 Content Count: 2115 Joined: 05/06/08 Status: Offline Share Posted January 13, 2009 Okay guys, my other desktop is beeing horribly unstable, crashing only a few minutes after it got turned on, every time. This is serious now, please do not come with "haha virus, stop downloading porn w/e". I dont care, does anybody know what to do? Last time I ran Spybot S&D It sayed somthing about a malware installing over browser causing the system to be unstable, but I wasn't able to remove it so I thought I wouldn't be too much of an issue. Anybody got any serious advice please? Reinstalling XP is not an option, since I got important business documents, titles etc. on it. Link to comment

Go out, spend between 50-100 dollars, get yourself an external hard drive (as you should be backing up your important documents anyway. seriously, if you care that much at least back them up), put all your important everythings on the external and do a clean reinstall. If your computer is that bad it sounds like you just need a clean slate. Also, it helps cut down on clutter, as you only have to reinstall the programs you need again. It's a bit of a hassle, but a 2-3 hours and you can be back to brand new. Link to comment

SpikedRocker Posted January 13, 2009 Content Count: 6242 Joined: 04/13/08 Status: Offline Share Posted January 13, 2009 Sounds like his biggest issue is when windows boots and starts running through its processes it gets to one specific exe and tries to run it and just crashes the computer. I'd try starting windows in safe mode to cut out all these extra processes and then try backing up the files you need. Then reformat or find the process that is causing the crash and find a way to get rid of it. Link to comment

I use Malware Bytes anti-malware tool it works for most things. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php A couple of recommendations once you do get your machine either cleaned or re-formatted. Don't use an administrator account for daily use. Use a standard account and only login or use "run as" when you need an administrative account. This will cut down on the amount of things that are able to attack your machine. Always use a password. I have seen rootkits and other attacks that look for an account with elevated privileges that don't have a set password and then use that to disable anti-virus, install spyware etc. And back your shit up.. especially if it is important for work or personal use. If you can't afford to lose it, keep it in more than one location. There is a free service for up to 2GB & for personal use for only $5/per month you can up that to unlimited.
