Coffee Crisp Posted March 7, 2009 Content Count: 4960 Joined: 06/20/07 Status: Offline Share Posted March 7, 2009 (edited) Heh I remember talking to my friend about how extraterrestrial life may end up being our end. Besides, I don't know why people get so worked up over finding life on another planet when we should focus on preserving our own. Besides, who cares if we find life on another planet. If it isn't intelligent at all it will not benefit us as human beings at all. The most logical way to actually find life in my opinion is to abandon all projects looking for it and expand our exploration technology so we could actually develop enough to start searching for it beyond our Solar System. Even better, we could start developing some technologies because the Earth's non regenerable resources are running out quickly, our population is exceeding, and the Earth is growing more hostile (in habitability) and more alike Venus' every couple hundred years. I'm not really saying we're wasting our money and time on these things, but I'm saying that we have more important issues and interests to deal with. This of course is a interesting topic, but not a major important one. I'm not proud to say it, but I love astronomy 1 Edited March 7, 2009 by Coffee Crisp Link to comment

I'm not proud to say it, but I love astronomy Well since the universe is so immense it is going to be some time before we develop advanced enough technology to enable us to traverse the universe on a wide enough scale. Most planets you cannot even stand on, let alone live on. The only speed fast enough to travel at least a partial section of what we can see to be our universe is near-light speed. Even if we could travel at the speed of light, it would take more than a lifetime to reach most places; since exceeding the speed of light is impossible according to the general theory of relativity, it will be a long time before we get anywhere. If other galaxies or areas of the universe possess different laws of physics, then perhaps we could go far enough. However, even developing technology fast enough to travel at the speed of light would be extremely difficult. We would (theoretically) have to use a spacecraft made from liquid metal so that it did not collapse and fall apart from the scorching speeds it would reach, and to generate enough speed we would have to design some sort of anti-matter propulsion system. I'm not saying it's unlikely the human race will ever meet other intelligent lifeforms, I'm just saying that it is going to be one hell of a time before it happens. Link to comment

What I really meant in my post was that searching will slow us down to the point where we won't even be around anymore. It's very likely that if we as humans continue to grow the way we are currently we won't really last for another couple Millenniums and wasting time on less important things like astrobiology won't be helpful to us. PotshotPolka Posted March 7, 2009 Content Count: 6084 Joined: 03/31/08 Status: Offline Share Posted March 7, 2009 How's about getting rockets into space without having them routinely explode on the tarmac before even thinking about interstellar travel sound? Link to comment

However, being able to gauge how smart they are or anything about them other than "they might exist" is BS. Also, isn't being able to travel faster than the speed of light impossible for matter and information? I'm pretty sure it's the limit. Link to comment

Matter cant reach the speed of light..if I remember from my physics class...because things become infinitely heavy... Link to comment
