Theres actually a mathmatical equasion to answer your question:

847914dec26cc45ac2957da0054683de.png

N is the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible;

and

R* is the average rate of star formation in our galaxy

fp is the fraction of those stars that have planets

ne is the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets

fℓ is the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point

fi is the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life

fc is the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space

L is the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

This is known as the Drake Equation

Plug the numbers in and you'll know how much life is in the universe. :-P

The general accepted answer amung people who believe this could be a good estimate is:

N = 7 × 0.5 × 2 × 0.33 × 0.01 × 0.01 × 10000 = 2.31

So estimated value, theres 1 other inteligent civilization outside of us somewhere in the universe.

lolwut?

And also, even if there isn't some form of life somewhere in space (which I doubt) right now, think about this: As far as time goes, the time in which humans have existed isn't even a flash in the pan as far as the whole universe goes, so if not now then the eons in the future have a chance of having life.

It's true. However that statistic is for our galaxy, not universe.

Actually you can modify the equasion for other galaxies, its just harder to gauge the different things involved since we cannot differentiate the individual stars in other galaxies. But in therory, you can, its just primarly based in galaxies.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/space/03/06/nasa.kepler.launch.planets/index.html

Kepler Telescope launched last week. This telescope's main mission is to look for exosolar planets. These planets are orbiting far off stars and are able to be detected as the planet makes a transit, passes infront of the star, and the size and distance from the star is determined by the "wobble" created when the transit occurs.

We will not find life from a telescope, but we could find the best potential star systems that could be inhabitable. To put it in perspective when Voyager 1 took a picture of Earth from where it was about 10 Billion miles away, all you could see is a "pale blue dot". Even with our Hubble telescope Pluto is only 4 pixels wide. So we won't be able to photograph exoplanets but we'll know they are there.

If we do find alien life, what do you think the government will do? Welcome them? Try to attack them? Or try to discriminate against them as the people of the world do to anything that is different?
