Living History/Re-enacting

Anyone else take part in either of these two hobbies? I've been a reenacter since about 2005, however have taken about a 2-year hiatus from the hobby, and am just now getting back into it.

 

What is re-enacting you ask? In layman's terms, it's cowboys and indians. To be more specific, it's men and women dressed in exact(I stress the word exact, as when I first started, I was Lol'd at for a few modern pieces) gear from a certain timeframe, and trying to accurately re-create certain battles, events, and eras from times past. It's been a great hobby for me the past few years.

 

I was primarily inspired to take part in this activity after reading a few of Stephen E. Ambrose's books, for instance Citizen Soldiers, D-Day, and Band of Brothers. Also, movies were a huge part in it, featuring many titles like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and The Longest Day.

 

I currently hold a few impressions, which include:

 

• 82nd/101st Airborne Rifleman (Normandy)
  
• 82nd/101st Airborne Combat Medic (Normandy)
  
• U.S. Navy Aviator, 1942 (Sub-Impression)
  

 

I am in the process of trying to put together a German impression of some form, whether it be Wermacht or SS, whatever units are closer to me.

Re-enacting history always seemed really cool to me. I'd rather re-enact a medieval battle though.

I've seen a re-enacted Gettysburg battle up in PA. It was pretty cool, but I don't remember too much because I was just a weeee lad.

 

Haven't seen any others though. I would be interested in seeing a post-Civil War era re-enactment of some kind though, or maybe even a Revolutionary War one.

My neighbor reenacts the civil war battles. I went to one meeting but I just don't have time for it. It sounds cool, he describes how at night you can see all the campfires around and just hear of everyone telling stories and stuff.

One of my relatives has a massive German collection, I don't know too much about it but I know he has a whole german ww2 uniform with a sabre.

 

As some people have pointed out, this looks pretty dam expensive.

Eh, I'm not really sure. Some of this stuff I bought five years ago when I first started. Yes, it's an expensive hobby, but not if you find the right places to buy from. A lot of places will make A+ quality reproductions for little.
