get the phone, get it unlocked. You can still connect to wifi for free and any other device you can connect through.

I don't really see the point of unlocking it unless other networks have cheaper pay as you go calls or something.

Surely your home connection has built in wireless in the hub?

Yes but I had when I'm out in mind.
