Your internet speed can only be raised if you pay for a higher internet package from your ISP. I can use a router from 2005 or a router from 2009 and still get the same download rate. But if you do want to object me on this, the quality of the router could affect your internet speed. Say your download rate is advertise by your ISP as 6.0 Mbps. Well, using a bad quality router could decrease this (but usually the decrease could be quite negligible). But even if you pay 200 dollars for a router, your download rate will not go above the advertised 6.0 Mbps. I can buy a 50 dollar router or a 200 dollar and both will have the same results.
