can anyone explain

I thought the reviews for the cards covered it pretty well. They're for people who work professionally with 3D software, specifically 3D modeling and rendering. These are cards that excel at the calculation of decimal numbers with an extreme amount of numbers after the decimal place when you need absolute precision. These things produce billions of colors and consequently excel at true color reproduction. These things excel at handling massive textures/images.

 

I'll go out on a limb and say all the CGI effects produced in movies and all the Pixar movies are products of these kinds of cards at work. I don't know that for sure but it's a pretty fair assumption to make I think.

 

EDIT: And they're absolutely not for gaming. You can game on them, sure, but there's absolutely no comparison between the best card of this nature versus the best gaming card. Gaming cards are specifically built around speed, whereas these cards are built for incredible accuracy and calculations(which is the very foundation of the rendering process).
