What makes people like the music they listen to?

The type of people they hang around. Jocks, emos, goths, skaters, geeks etc.

 

Their geographical location, southern, urban, europe etc.

Environment does affect personality and musical taste.

 

Case and point: Country Music and Nascar

I listen to just about anything, and I hate a lot of things, meaning your theories of personality/music taste being interrelated are incorrect or at least irrelevant in this case.

I can see why some genres, especially mainstream rap are looked down upon by many people.

personally i like music because of both beats and lyrics

so basicly both must be good and not stupid(ex. popular rap- hip-hop music)

I think Red's logic applies to at least 60% of all people. Younger and older generations in particular, but the middle age groups taste in music is a little bit more expanded and is open to more things. Some things you just have to acquire a taste for.
