@shadow: you speak only half the truth. You don't need to buy a new-series CPU, especially when avoiding costs. a Q-series (like pot has been saying over and over) would save him vast amounts of money (the CPU is cheaper, the ram is cheaper, the mobos are cheaper)

@akaru: true, but you NEVER want the GPU as the bottleneck. Until we discover room-temperature superconductivity, we should all agree that the cpu should be the bottleneck.

Wrathek: I posted benchmarks, newegg's got prices. There's no room for opinion or argument in this, the best solution is very simply a matter of mechanically finding the highest performing system configuration that fits in his budget.

there is surely room for argument. everyone here knows that an i7 or some phenoms outperform a Q-series. the point is if he gets a q-series, he'll save alot more money, meaning that he either could spend more on a graphics card and/or HDD, or at the least save money. idk about you guys but i never try to spend "the max" that im hoping to spend on something.

and as i said before. even if he gets a phenom that is ~$150 cheaper, the motherboard is probably going to be more expensive.

Are you serious? HD 4850 is the best bang for your buck. It has the highest price to performance ratio out of all high end AMD cards.

920 also has the highest price to performance ratio out of all Intel processors (at that price range).

It's not even a fetish. BTW, I just released it is refurb. I don't think you should get a refurb.

Actually the 4870 has the best price to performance ratio. There is a pretty big difference in performance between a 4870 and a 4850. The cost of an XFX 4870 is only $15 more.

You are most likely correct as I am basing my statement off reviews when the 4850 first came out. I haven't kept up with ATI since.

It's true, the 4870 blew the original line of GTX 260-275 price range out of the water, and they started slashing. The 5000 class GPUs will soon do the same to the 285+ cards.

Even if you hate their CPUs, gotta love AMD for keeping Nvidia and Intel competitive.

actually in most of the benches I've seen even my old Q9450 (not even made anymore) outperforms most of the phenom II's.

Well what do you expect from a 800 dollar budget? Are you expecting i7 965 with GTX 295s in QuadSLI? Come on now, I know you are good at computers, probably better than me, but it's a 800 dollar budget.

i like how he says probably :cheesy:
