likely reasons for a wire becoming unshielded? well.. physics, and uh.. bad luck, is about all that is required for this to occur.

either, get a new headset bro, or open it up (if it can be w/o breaking the plastic casing) and find any wires where you see copper exposed, and if so, wrap some electrical tape around it.

but yes, when sound goes out like that (especially if it randomly comes back) it means there is a short (caused by unshielded wires touching)

You could do what I do, just have sound playing through speakers and use the headset as a mic only. A whole side of my headphone doesn't even have anything on it, the wire actually sticks out, so I just let it rest on my head and use the mic while I let sound come through my speakers. Works fine for me.

(Creative Fatality).

There's your problem.

Buy a headset that isn't branded with some fuckface player.

And seriously, think about going the separate good headset and mic route.

^^^ Did you think the rest of us were lying? Any headset that's branded for "surround" or "gaming" is like buying something from the As Seen On TV section of bed bath and beyond.
