Eversmen Posted November 27, 2009 Content Count: 158 Joined: 11/07/07 Status: Offline Share Posted November 27, 2009 I'm looking to build a new computer, but I'm not to familiar with hard drives. Is a Western Digital 300Gb VelociRaptor really worth it for $200 for only 300gb? I was looking at that and a Western Digital 1TB hardrive, but people have given me mixed stories on whether to buy WD or Seagate. I would advise getting the 1TB HDD, mainly due to personal experience with 300-400GB HDDs running out of space too fast. Link to comment

Akaru Posted November 27, 2009 Content Count: 1000 Joined: 06/12/09 Status: Offline Share Posted November 27, 2009 Unless you are an extreme hard core gamer, I'd say a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive is more than enough. I am running a 7200RPM drive and my computer can boot up in under 20 seconds. With the Velocirapter 10000RPM hard drive, my computer can probably boot in 10 seconds. From what I know, hard drive is the biggest bottleneck in existance. You can have the best processor, RAM, video card, and motherboard, but if you have a slow hard drive, you will be slowed down. Guy Posted December 5, 2009 Content Count: 166 Joined: 06/16/09 Status: Offline Share Posted December 5, 2009 The western digital black 1tb drives are only marginally slower then the velociraptor drives for most usage patterns, I wouldn't suggest the big price increase for shaving a few seconds off of load times. The reason a 7200rpm drive of that size is almost the same in speed as a 300gb 10k drive is because of simple mechanics. The 1tb drive has two 500gb spinning platters, while the raptor as two 150gb platters. They physically measure the same in size, but for every read/write operation the raptor has to make, it has to move the hard drive head 3.5 times further on the spinning disk platter. This creates a delay in switching between various places on the disk drive. Link to comment
