Kuro Posted December 17, 2009 Content Count: 1845 Joined: 11/13/09 Status: Offline Share Posted December 17, 2009 Me and my bro share internet, and lately there has been more usage on his end which makes my game play lag. It mainly happens when we run something like torrent, the other person lags. So my question is, What kind of internet package would we need so that if someone is downloading it wont effect the others game play? I'm basically trying to figure out if its better in the long run to just get my own separate internet service. Link to comment

Jager Posted December 17, 2009 Content Count: 1300 Joined: 06/24/07 Status: Offline Share Posted December 17, 2009 if you have him set rate limits of upload download, he wont lag your net out, depending on your connection that is generally 10-15kb/s upload and 50-100kb/s dl, the dl isn't nearly as important as the upload to be honest. Me and my roommate had the same problem, we both kept lagging each others internet. Then I bought an Ethernet wire, hooked that from my router right to my computer, and no problems since (and its a hell of at lot fast). However if you both already use wired....get a better internet provider, even with him dling torrents you should be fine if you guys have wired connections. Link to comment

jazzy Posted December 18, 2009 Content Count: 2187 Joined: 06/28/09 Status: Offline Share Posted December 18, 2009 You should tell us your current connection first. Anyways, the problem is that when you compare a cs:s game to a web browser, you take on two things, one cs:s only uses the resources necessary, while a web browser will attempt to download at full speed the pages it wants, hence when you lag. What you can do is install Netlimiter on their computers, and limit their internet to a reasonable amount, in my experience you should ALWAYS carry atleast 40kb/s for a cs:s game, but you actually don't necessarily use all of it, it's usually quite a bit less than that. As for torrents, you can download torrents and play games at the same time on pretty much any connection except for those shitty phone-line ones, what you need to do is limit your download speed and upload speed. I cannot stress that enough, you may not get it done faster but if you have a 150kb/s line, have torrents dling at 75kb/s, and you're iming & gaming, you won't have any lag. Unless ssomeone else is using your internet. So what im generally trying to say is that you don't need a new package (unless your connection is Also if you are using a wireless router make sure you use a great password and use WPA/WPA2, as WEP password protection CAN BE CRACKED WITHOUT BRUTEFORCING. However, WPA/WPA2 cannot. Just use a really secretive password 1 Link to comment
Kuro Posted December 18, 2009 Content Count: 1845 Joined: 11/13/09 Status: Offline Share Posted December 18, 2009 my internet is through charter communications, its a cable modem and we just upgraded to some package .. its suppose to be 20mb i think. I'm running the modem through one wireless d-link router then to my house to another d-link router. The one at my house has password on it, it's wep i think. But the other one doesn't. But i checked the usage logs and i didn't see anyone i don't know. Sometimes i lose internet connection completely and its the cable modem which i have to unplug and reboot. Link to comment

EX: If you have 1Mb of bandwidth, then set ur torrent or w.e at 500kb/s and then you have 500kb/s for playing games and keeping an ok ping. If you want our suggestions on internet packages, we need to know who ur ISP is, and what they offer where you live. Link to comment
