considering that a barrett M82 (for example) is used against enemy equipment, I highly doubt you would use it against people

50 cal is also used as long range anti personnel weaponry, as far back as m2 machine gun goes, so yes 50 cal rounds can and are used for that role.

 

is it overkill? probably, but when you can reliably reach out to a mile or more to hit targets, i dont see why it wouldnt be used.

 

the US navy used 50 cals to snipe the hijackers/pirates holding those crewmen back on good friday of last year.
