With as much cash as 2500$ I see no reason to even consider going below a i7, preferably the 920 for the best bang for the buck. i7's are far more future-proof than Phenom II's. For graphics you could probably crossfire some 5870s or just grab a 5970 if you can find somewhere with them in stock.

 

I wouldn't recommend socket 1156 since they're limited to two 8x lanes, which while doesn't really make much of a difference with 2 cards, it definately will in the future. Socket 1366 will also have the new six core gulftown cpu's coming out, which is nice upgradability in the long road.

$2500 is quite a lot of money. Any mid-high level quad core CPU, 8GB RAM (DDR2 or DDR3), Gigabyte/Abit/etc motherboard, GTX 290 or whatever is current GPU. He can max out essentially everything and come under $2500.
