It only takes one afternoon to learn to use a manual. And unless you are a complete idiot there isnt any real risk of destroying the clutch. Just remember that stalling is almost always letting the clutch out too fast not lack of throttle.

I have a standard car also, got it about 1 month ago. It's a Hyundai Accent 97, I know, it's not a 20## car but it runs good and it's on good conditions and it takes me to college everyday with no problem, plus, it's really economical. It took me like 10 minutes to learn standard, only problem I have is when moving the car, I leave the clutch on for to long and that slowly messes up the clutch, I guess I'm afraid of the car turning off in the stop light or when in traffic that you have to keep pressing the clutch everytime to move 3feets and stop, but it takes time to get used to it, you will regret getting a standard car when you start getting into a lot of traffics, your feet is going to hurt because of how long and the amount of times you going to be pressing the clutch. What I do is that I put it in neutral and let go of the clutch and then when I have to move a bit forward, put it back to 1st, move and then back to neutral, works for me ;). It's a nice car you got, and for a start... that makes it even better. Congrats on your new toy :).

heres a good suggestion on how to obtain a stick car to learn on free. get a buddy that knows how to drive stick and go to a dealer and ask to test drive a car thats stick usually they give you the keys and let you test it alone they dont come into the car with you. tell the guy at the dealer you wanna take it to your mechanic to check it out so you will be gone for like a hour or 2

(the friend is to drive the car out the dealer, because if they see you stall it and not know how to drive stick they wont let you take it) so once you guys go down a block or 2 your friend lets your take over and thats 2 hours of free learning on a stick car, do that like 5 times at diff dealerships and you will get the hang of it enoughf to not screw up your own car!
