Not sure how if they appear 'Offline' on Steam and you use a different name...

For one if you're playing a server you always play, people end up knowing who you are after you play for awhile, such as Spartan beating a ton of MG maps faster than anyone else can. Along with some Surf Admins.

 

Also, while in game, shift+tab and bring up the player list, it'll tell you the Steam friends ID of everyone in the server even if they're appear offline, I believe.
