I plaid for quite a while yesterday without lag until people started using them. This is the message I get from the console: Netchannel: failed reading message svc_VoiceData from 64.34.210.98:*****. mapper Posted March 8, 2010 Content Count: 1563 Joined: 08/03/09 Status: Offline Share Posted March 8, 2010 Try this console command. rate 25000 If it's already set to this then I can't really offer any kind of fix other than disabling voice. That console command is voice_enabled 0 but this cuts you off from any kind of talking and you can't talk. It'll fix the problem, but it's a bandage to the real issue. The higher the number the faster information is sent to and from your computer to the server. Though the cap is at 25000 Hope this helps Link to comment

See the parts at the bottom that say "Loss" and "Choke" on the net_graph? Both of those are very bad. 3. Fiddle with "cl_updaterate" and "rate" until they both say 0 during a game 4.Additionally put "Myinfo_bytes 8192" which gives you up to 8kb for voice messages compared to the 256 byte default. This should fix not only any lag problems you have (or others have with you) from bad rates but also help with any other overflows you might get that aren't hardware problems. If you have a good connection (1.5mbit down or better) then honestly there's no reason not to just max out everything (100-100-300000) and let servers just send you whatever they're able to handle on their end, CS:S takes not that much bandwidth to begin with and voice comm in it is a few kilobytes at max. There is also strong evidence this is correlated to having a bad soundcard, especially SoundMAX branded ones. If you buy a new computer this probably won't be an issue again since almost everybody uses Realtek now. p.s. Edited March 9, 2010 by Shadowex3 Link to comment

evilmeanie Posted March 13, 2010 Content Count: 19 Joined: 03/11/10 Status: Offline Share Posted March 13, 2010 (edited) This is something any and every online gamer should at least check. One thing that I always have to adjust is my MTU size. Whats that? MTU stands for maximum transmission unit. It's geek speak for the largest size a data packet can be without fragmenting. So what is the problem here? Well, your PC can create a packet that is larger than the packet size supported by your ISP. So when your ISP gets the big packet, it fragments it and sends it as two pieces. This results in a slower transmission of data and strange things happening in online games. How do I test this? Go to this web page and jump right to step 2. If the packets fragment, follow the rest of the suggestion. If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, the tool they use will not work, so you have to set your packet size manually. The command to do this is: netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=xxxx store=persistent You replace xxxx with your maximum packet size from the ping test and then adding + 28. And if you network is named something other than "Local Area Connection" then that needs to be changed as well. Once it is set, you have to reboot before it takes effect. Bullet Wound Posted March 13, 2010 Content Count: 2390 Joined: 09/24/08 Status: Offline Share Posted March 13, 2010 Interrogate your brother and find out how he fucked up the computer, if hes computer illiterate, ask him exactly what he did with it. (In all honesty you should have started with this) If that fails, delete the games from your system (actually delete not just un-install) then remove steam, and re-install everything. Yes it will be a pain......but apart from messing around with a lot of things that you don't understand, its the safest route. And in all honesty steam will take like 15 minutes, CSS will take under an hour, since you can't play the games without lag anyways, its not a big loss. Link to comment
