Itch Posted April 5, 2010 Content Count: 3440 Joined: 12/12/07 Status: Offline Share Posted April 5, 2010 I have used a few different water cooling setups in the past. There are quite a few pro's and a few con's as well. 1st - few of them have a good monitoring system, so make sure you are running something to monitor system temp. I have seen a few machines fried because of an air bubble and the person had no temp monitoring setup. 2nd - A small leak can be fucking expensive. So to avoid costly repair/replacements of hardware I would recommend running with something other than water. Such as FluidXP which is non-conductive and runs a far smaller risk of frying something if a leak occurs. There are other non-conductive coolants out there. FluidXP is just one that I've used, and I've seen fully submerged systems run in the stuff. 3rd - Portability can become an issue. I personally enjoy taking my PC to Lan parties at friends houses. With some water cooled setups this becomes difficult. I helped setup a Zalman rig that was a royal pain to transport once setup. It looked something like this. Personally I don't like water cooled setup's for my PC because I would rather spend the money on a better proc or video card than on a water cooled setup to overclock a lesser proc. That being said if you want to run with water cooling do it! And by all means they work well in a lot of cases. Just have fun with it. And make sure you cover your bases before you fill it up and turn it on. Link to comment
TheVirus Posted April 5, 2010 Content Count: 3391 Joined: 06/12/09 Status: Offline Share Posted April 5, 2010 I've been using my Koolance PC3-720SL for about 7 years or so. No leaks, no problems. It's just expensive to get new blocks for upgrades. Each new CPU socket usually needs a new block, each video card requires a new block, etc. You also need to drain the system when switching blocks or adding them. It's a pain, but it's quiet. Pretty impressive since every CPU since the Pentium 4 has had both thermal throttling and an emergency thermal shutdown built into it. 2nd - A small leak can be fucking expensive. FluidXP is just one that I've used, and I've seen fully submerged systems run in the stuff. Water is not conductive. Ions and particulates IN the water ARE conductive. FluidXP will pick up stuff from every metal part it touches and become just as conductive as de-ionized water. What you really want to look out for is mold and bacteria growth. 3rd - Portability can become an issue. I personally enjoy taking my PC to Lan parties at friends houses. With some water cooled setups this becomes difficult. I helped setup a Zalman rig that was a royal pain to transport once setup. It looked something like this. Yeah watercooling is a BITCH to move, you usually need to re-bleed each time you move it. So why are you watercooling mon, just for the fun of it? Watercooling is still a passive air-through-heatsink system, unless you're benchmarking competitively you wont outperform the average high end heatpipe tower. Link to comment

Wrathek Posted April 9, 2010 Content Count: 1839 Joined: 09/28/08 Status: Offline Share Posted April 9, 2010 never done it, probably never will. If you put enough fans in a case, it won't ever get too hot. and if your cpu is running too hot from OC, either get a big-assed HSF, and/or get a better CPU. Link to comment
