Hellspawn Posted August 14, 2010 Content Count: 368 Joined: 12/07/09 Status: Offline Share Posted August 14, 2010 Laptops aren't made for gaming. If you see them being labeled as such, just walk right past the product, all laptops overheat easily due to poor airflow and manufacturer parts. They are made to downsize and should never be used for more than a couple of hours at best for web browsing. Gaming laptops end up being a bad purchase. They are not easily upgradable so when you end up paying $1000 for a laptop you are generally not able to upgrade said computer and your piece of hardware ends up becoming outdated in a little more than 2 years. NEVER buy a gaming laptop. There's a reason we use desktops, it's because they are cheap to make, have good airflow, allow you to customize what you want in a PC, and can be maintained to be able to keep up with hardware specifications for atleast 4-5 years without having to upgrade every part simultaneously. Either way, even if you think you are on the go 24/7 (you never really are, are you?), a "gaming" laptop is a bad choice to play games port-ably on. Maybe just buy a DSi or something? look at my post again, I play on laptop just fine, I can play games for upwards of 10 hours without worrying to much about the heat. but i usually never play more then 5 with work and all. the only reason it I had to send it in for repairs from overheating it is because I sometimes play games when I'm really tired and pass out while the game is still running, so the game will be running upwards 20 hours and that my friend is no good. so don't shoot down laptops as a gaming device especially if you've never owned one. 1 Link to comment
Dirk Posted August 14, 2010 Content Count: 2167 Joined: 07/14/10 Status: Offline Share Posted August 14, 2010 gaming laptops are all awful because you cant really use them on the go because the batter last two minutes they are heavy and you can cook on them. Then when you get home they are not as good for gaming because the keyboard is fixed to the monitor and its all not very ergonomic. To fix this you can get a ps2 keyboard and monitor but then you may as well have a desktop and at least that would be upgradeable and have a graphics card that works with all the drivers and not just the ones they use for mobile chips. 1 Link to comment

I'm sorry that just made me lol I get you were trying to be serious, but come on. I liked the part where you bashed the battery(or the batter as you put it) I've flown quite a few times being in the military and I've taking my laptop with me each time, the average flight time is usually around 2 hours and guess what I'm doing for the better part of it? playing games, the whole time. and that doesn't even kill the whole battery so I think you should stfu and learn a few things before you bash on something you have no idea what your talking about. I get more life out of my laptops battery then my PSP, now that thing is a POS. 1 Link to comment
jazzy Posted August 14, 2010 Content Count: 2187 Joined: 06/28/09 Status: Offline Share Posted August 14, 2010 Nice tirade. You neglect gamers that move occasionally, and don't want to lug around a desktop. I'm going to Russia in a year, does that mean I have to spend $200 to ship my desktop in pieces to a location I may not be comfortable leaving it, or even for that matter shipping all those delicate parts across the world? A laptop can range from very heavy to very light. In most cases when you buy a "gaming" laptop it can fairly heavy. Depending on how much your desktop weighs. It can range the same. Desktops and laptops don't usually differ in durability. Believe it or not, a desktop tower is pretty durable. As for your LCD I agree, it would be hard to ship. But the extent of $200? Don't be ill witted. If you wish to bring up small details that can garner the idea of owning a desktop, I shall aswell. A laptop can easily be stolen. I've seen it happen once (airport). And have heard of it many a times. Laptops are also usually the target to more clumsy effects like dropping them, or spilling something on their keyboard and ruining the parts inside. A gaming laptop is obviously difficult to cool, not impossible obviously, they can be kept decently cool, but yes, they're obviously not meant for lugging around and using on the fly like a netbook, they have neither the battery life or portability for that, its just a mobile desktop. A $1500 gaming laptop today may only match a $800-1000 desktop at best in performance, but I highly doubt it will be useless in two years, it may not be bleeding edge but that's it. I disagree. Most laptops sold today WILL be outdated in 2 years. In fact, most laptops performance wise are still years behind in terms of performance done by desktop powerhouses. Laptops also have additional costs, like the cost of external fans if you need to keep it cooler, along with having to replace your battery, or in some cases, your A/C cord as well. It's possible also tobreak your keyboard and need to reship to manufacturer. If you're hellbent on it like I said in OP, the primary factor to look out for is the graphics card, since the mobile versions are often underclocked versions of the regular ones. Either way, my recommendation is to stay extremely cheap. Hell you can even get backbone PCs with very tiny cases, get a LCD and attach it to the barebone PC (its not as hard as you think). Most laptop manufacturers use flimsy cases that suffer from overheating, etc I'd love to see more laptop barebone kits like OCZ's, it'll happen eventually as die shrinks become more advanced but until then w/e. Agreed. look at my post again, I play on laptop just fine, I can play games for upwards of 10 hours without worrying to much about the heat. but i usually never play more then 5 with work and all. the only reason it I had to send it in for repairs from overheating it is because I sometimes play games when I'm really tired and pass out while the game is still running, so the game will be running upwards 20 hours and that my friend is no good. so don't shoot down laptops as a gaming device especially if you've never owned one. look at my post again, I play on laptop just fine, I can play games for upwards of 10 hours without worrying to much about the heat. but i usually never play more then 5 with work and all. the only reason it I had to send it in for repairs from overheating it is because I sometimes play games when I'm really tired and pass out while the game is still running, so the game will be running upwards 20 hours and that my friend is no good. so don't shoot down laptops as a gaming device especially if you've never owned one. If a laptop overheats after 20 hours that is your main problem. You think thats a long time but most desktop computers run for WEEKS NON-STOP. I think I've clocked atleast a month at one time on my desktop. Believe me, they overheat too easily. I don't own one. My school owns them and I've used them for 4 years. 2 years I've had them 24/7 for about 200 days straight. They are tablet computers that cost about $800 without the software installed (it's much much much more than that). Laptop manufacturers like HP, Dell, Gateway, Sony, and Apple are NOT what you think. They are not "REALLY GOOD" laptop makers. They use extremely cheap laptops parts and attempt to use poor power supply caps which cause melting in the power supply unit. It CAN kill you and your laptop. Laptop manus are not your friends. There's a reason we build our computers, it's because computer manufacturers fuck you over and we all know it. Gaming laptops are a bad buy. This is from personal experience and years of computer knowledge coupled with computer repairing. Mostly software issues, however. I get more life out of my laptops battery then my PSP, now that thing is a POS. This is probably one of the biggest lies I have ever seen. I work with students on homework each day on our tablets. Our teachers tablets only last about 5 minutes 100%. I can prove that too. My laptop from last year last about an hour or two so I was content but I've seen some just shit poor battery life. Upgrading your battery seems to be the only way to get shit done too. Also PSPs are the shit. Emulating SNES/NES/N64 and being able to play PS1 and PSP exclusive games. Now that owns. Link to comment

I think you misunderstood what i was trying to say, I'm not In any way shape or form trying to say that laptops are better then desktops, all I was saying is that you can play games on a laptop for a pretty long time at full quality without worrying about it overheating. yes I do realize desktops can go weeks without having to be shut down, but I ask the question, why would you need it to be on for weeks, you trying to break down a gene sequence? And no I wasn't lying about my battery, I never said how much life it had after 2 hours now did I, after 2 hours it will be hitting the 10% mark depending on what exactly I was doing, and I don't know about the new PSP battery but I have the old one and it sucks. Customs cost for 50+lb order in excess of value of $1600 (I have a fulltower case, and a lot of I/O shit) Plus since the parts are fragile some would have to be shipped separately you're looking at may 5-6 boxes. Plus, it's going by plane, not boat, I'm not waiting 3 months for my computer. You think I'm illwitted to think it costs that kind of money to ship something commercially? EDIT: Actually for giggles I calculated on UPS what it would cost to ship one large box that could hold everything I'd send with my computer. I was illwitted, it wasn't $200, it was $1200, for five days later lol. GG, Jazzy. 1 Edited August 14, 2010 by PotshotPolka Link to comment
