I assume you meant copper ("cable")? The latencies of short lengths of copper ( Not everyone has a halo around their head like you do Giving even faster speeds to people who don't need it (99.99% of residential customers) will make the Internet overall SLOWER. The main routers where everything must pass through will get more bogged down. I agree that the lines everywhere should be upgraded, but the residential customers have no NEED for a faster connection. Most of the Internet traffic used right now is for P2P. Imagine then, if everyone has a lot faster speeds. What do you think is going to happen? People are going to abuse their connection more, for more and more piracy. The entire series of tubes will slow down, causing larger latencies for everyone, regardless if they are running fiber or copper. Where did you go to school Harry? I would like to assassinate the teachers. Link to comment

I learned from the best (YouTube and Ex-Sen. Ted Stevens). What portion of my post might you be referring to? If you're talking about "slowing down the Internet due to a lot more traffic", it's a very real problem. Link to comment

People getting faster speeds isn't the problem. Companies likes ATT, Comcast, etc. not upgrading their infrastructure. Link to comment
Wrathek Posted September 15, 2010 Content Count: 1839 Joined: 09/28/08 Status: Offline Share Posted September 15, 2010 what spiffy said. what you're spouting is nonsense. if they upgrade their damn infrastructures from back when they first installed phone lines, the crippling problems we have right now would vanish. right now, giving people faster and faster internet DOES cause these problems, because the back-end servers and switches/miles of cable cannot handle the bandwidth. if they upgraded all of their transmission lines/servers/routers/switches to fiber, the speed would increase for everyone. they could sell the same bandwidth, without overselling it now, or sell more because they'd have vastly more to sell. people using the bandwidth they are sold to its fullest does not itself slow down traffic. the telcos overselling their bandwidth (because it is limited indeed) is what causes this problem, because joe blow down the block is downloading midget porn at the max speed he is allowed, but debbie downer next door complains of slow soap opera streaming speeds because joe and debbie share the same bandwidth because comcast/att sold them both more than they had to spare Link to comment

Even if their infrastructure is better, there is only so many tubes to fit across. 10,000 clients (typical for a residential area). Let's assume ~20% have some sort of botnet installed. If the botmaster is ordering "DDoS $site", do you not think that it will cripple the ISP's infrastructure's speed and latency, no matter how much they upgraded it? Idiots are going to get viruses and slow down the system for everyone. Link to comment

Are you an exec at comcast or something? I am thinking of it from a business standpoint. Would giving so quick speeds to people who don't even need/have any use for it (most of the residential customers) benefit anyone? No. Think, these are the people who run hot-porn.jpg.exe; do you really want them to contribute to the taking-down of websites when they join a botnet? I think the speeds should be offered, but you need to state a good reason for needing it. The majority of people who "I just use the Internets to check my email and facebook" will not ever need these speeds, and allowing them to have it will only rake up abuse problems. Link to comment
