Hi, pretty soon im going to be looking for a laptop for college. I have narrowed it down to an HP and a Sony. I am just wondering what your thoughts are on both of them.

HP laptop I am looking at: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6tse_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6tse_series

Sony Laptop I am looking at: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644691999

Ill tell you some Pros and cons for each:

HP Pros:

-Its an HP

-Cheaper when they give free upgrades(which is almost all the time)

-Good tech support

-Better graphics card

HP Cons:

-Smaller Screen

-No backlit keyboard

-much lower screen resolution

Sony Pros:

-Better resolution

-Backlit keyboard

-Bigger screen

Sony Cons:

-graphics card is ok. I dont believe i will see a difference

-less likely to get it as cheaper as a HP

I am still looking at forums trying to pinpoint the pros and cons of each one. I am going to college for Computer Information Systems so an i7 with 6gig ram is a must. In my head i do have a pretty good idea to what i am leading towards.. ill tell you guys after this discussion is over :)

So bring the comments, good or bad!! My max price for a laptop is around $1,400+- a little bit..

Thanks!!

Going off the pros/cons, and this being for college;

  1. Does screen size really matter? I'd actually say the smaller screen might be better if you're going to be taking it to classes.
  2. Use a flashlight, sup?
  3. Screen res. is meh sucks but deal wid it

I wouldn't buy either of them.. There are better options out there.

List what your criteria is...

Components you want..

which is more important size/weight or performance.

price you have to stay under etc.

And if I can manage to get a few free minutes I'll see what I can come up with for you.

Both HP & Sony are shit for support and the Sony laptops can be a nightmare when it comes to doing a clean install.

Not sure how reliable this chart is, but HP seems to have the highest malfunction rate out of all brands. I say go with Asus since I always hear good things about them or Toshiba(based on the chart). Sony is not a bad choice, though a tad expensive from what I remember. Also, I see many complaints about HP coming with many bloatware pre-installed.
