For the ~$1500 budget.

Case: Antec DF-85 (take a look at it, I suggest it because of the easy to clean fan filters etc. $160

CPU i7 950: $295

CPU cooler $40

Motherboard: $150

RAM 2X2GB DDR3 1600: $80

PSU 850W: $130

$855 so far

This means you have a lot of leg room for your videocard.

Radeon 6870 $240

$1095

+ another?

$1335, I'd say that's tempting because this thing crossfired would tear up anything that comes at max for a few years.

The ambient temp of the case would go up, but Antec cases can evacuate air very well, and if you ever plan on watercooling it has room for a 240x120mm radiator at the top.

mobo and cpu different sockets?

Anyhow, I dont know what kind of monitor you have but if I were you id get an i5-750 and use the saved money on a nice 23" coc.. huh monitor of some sort.

Or gaming hardware like headphones, mouse, or keyboard..

She's already got a HDD and peripherals, but good catch on the mobo, I linked the 1176 socket version.

lol yeah potshots mobo is 1156 and the cpu is 1366.

Also get the HD 6850, unless you can find a cheaper GTX 460 that has 1GB of VRAM AND Manufacturer OC. Or you could wait until the 580 comes out so that prices shift dramatically and then pounce on a gpu.

But either way, an i7 for gaming eeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Probably an i5 should cut it, if you listen to high quality music (FLAC), you could buffer up some room and get a good soundcard and some sweet headphones.

Also yeah tell us if your monitor is LCD or CRT and what size, if you are still using CRT you should upgrade, but if you're going to buy a mid-range gpu (like the ones that have been mentioned), you should stick to lower resolutions or else in a few years your gpu wont be enough to power the game at the native resolution of your monitor, the smaller your monitor, the less the gpu has to work. Most people can be content with 1440x900 or the 1680x1024.

believe me, get widescreen, or else you will get fucking owned by everyone else in any game you play because most people on games like source and battlefield games try to pump their fov to match their screens and can easily outmatch a 4:3 monitor.

No, believe me I do NOT want widescreen, it wont fit on my desk comfortably, it will make me rage, and I will probably end up throwing whatever I have handy at it when drunk because it annoys me that much. I tried using one before and ended up giving it to my mom because I hated it. I imagine if I'm not currently getting fucking owned with an average of 20fps, I will be fine but thanks.

Anyhow I think atm I have a 17" LCD(not 100% sure, but max reso is 1280x1024), which seriously fits on my desk perfectly. I could probably go a bit bigger but otherwise it'd just be a mess and I'd have to reorganize everything.

If you don't wanna spend your max ammount of 1500, then add a GTS 450/Radeon 5770 or a 460 on sale to my build which will put it under 1k. Potshot has an excellent build but if your playing on 1280/1024, any card higher than the ones I suggested is probably overkill.

Playing on that monitor I wouldnt worry about getting the best thing out there.. some nice upper mid range cards have been suggested..

I think if you used widescreen more youd eventually like it but I guess ill have to be ok withthe fact that you dont(there was another cock joke to be made there but only one per thread!!)

I mean I could trade my moms monitors again since she only uses her laptop now and use the 23" widescreen but I just hated it and it made my desk all cluttered =[

shame you don't live in the UK, Fragmasters usually do tourneys for Saphire cards.

it really depends on what you want your PC to do. running BF2 isn't THAT hard, hell; i run that pretty smoothly on this hunk of junk that i have.

it's not just about running bf2 she should probably also prepare for upcoming games that require more resources, if she wanted to run just bf2 she wouldn't even need to upgrade.

but 6850 is your best bet, the 460 isn't as good.
