it's not just about running bf2 she should probably also prepare for upcoming games that require more resources, if she wanted to run just bf2 she wouldn't even need to upgrade.

but 6850 is your best bet, the 460 isn't as good.

She's playing on 1028x1024 res..

A 9800GT would even do her in fine.. The 460 is fine for what she requires.

I don't know why you insist the 6850 is a better deal, the 6870 has considerable gains over it for $60. It also Crossfires VERY well.

Also @Kiwi, you don't build a computer for a monitor resolution, she supplied a budget, and she wanted to play BC2 (she said BF2 in the thread, not your fault guys).

I don't think she is going to need/want to crossfire/sli her cards. The 6870 can barely overclock (under 10% performance boost) while the 6850 can overclock and almost catch the 6870 (I believe the reviews I read showed a 75 mhz difference). Then again this probably doesn't matter because she probably won't overclock.

Kiwi makes a good point though, if the max resolution is so low, why pay for a gfx card that is stunted by that in the first place? The 6870 is meant from 1920 X 1080 resolutions to get it's full performance. Of course you don't buy your card based on resolution, but it's still an important factor considering shes only running 1280 X 1024.

Also, AA isn't in that benchmark pic, and honestly I've played with no aa and the difference is astounding.

Probably a better ballpark estimate of what she could get. In all honesty (I am no tech wizard at all, seriously) I'd suggest getting a GTX460, you can buy overclocked editions that make it better than the 6850 and it will kill Bc2 in 1280x1024. But american's pricing is different from Canada's, so the best deal is finding a cheap 6870 combo with one of your other parts.

Yes and a 9800GT is barely even MADE anymoroe, let alone cost-effective, the 9800GT varies $100 or so, while the 6850 doubles up performances on it, for about $60 more.

Also why the fuck would you buy a 9800GT that's almost out of it's lifespan?

If you dont need all that much and dont mind the lack of dx11 support, instead of a 9800GT you could look into a 9800 GTX/GTS 250. (they are the same thing) Yes it is slower than thr 460 but it can be had for around $100 and get about 70% the performance.

In DX9 games, yes. In DX11 games, no. You DON'T build computers for the past, you build them for the future so that they can last 5 years.

Just saying, if I'm spending money to upgrade.. I don't want to upgrade to "well this can't run this and it's not all that good, but it'll save you money!" If the only thing "stunting" Potshots build would be a monitor then I don't see why when I can spend the money I'd purchase something worse simply to save a few bucks? Especially if chances are I'd just have to upgrade sooner because the build I just spend several hundred on still can't run newer games on high settings. Clearly I haven't upgraded in years, I don't follow hardware markets, or even the newest shit out anymore, nor do I care to once I build this new computer. There's a hell of a lot of fanboyism that gets old very fast.

I already have a 23" inch monitor that doesn't get used at all even though I don't want to use it, I'll still try it out and decide which I prefer. I just didn't want to spend money on something I know I already don't like.

tl;dr: I don't care about saving ~100 if it means getting something complete shit.

you cant run dx11 without windows 7 and the 9800s ran dx10 fine. but mostly i was providing an alternative to the 9800GT someone suggested earlier. you can still fin the gts 250 and it will eat the 9800GT alive!
