New Graphics Card

I'm not completely sure what to buy when it comes to graphic cards, I'm just looking for something

 

My current specs are:

 

AMD Athlon 64 X2 (3.2GHz)

2GB DDR2 RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

 

I will also upgrade my RAM if you reckon it would be necessary alongside a new card.

Another 2GB of RAM would do you wonders. In your price range, a GTX 460 on the low end, maybe a Radeon 5870 if you fork out a bit more, I don't know how much VAT screws you in the UK.

Or you could wait...for the GTX 560... Your choice but from what I hear the GTX 460 is a beast and perfect for you price range.

Absolutely amazing, I can run Crysis on all ultra high (whatever highest is) and it never lags (30-40+ FPS)

2GB of ram is fine imo. I use it and run apps like photoshop, garry's mod, etc just fine on win7. But if you find a nice deal go for it, right now ddr2 ram is still a shitload of cash to spend.

Yes Jazzy, $45 (1066 even, 800 is cheaper) for 2GB of RAM is obviously overpriced, and doesn't help choppy framerates. It doesn't boost performance, it simply prevents spikes from causing lag by providing more slack.

 

Also, if you have 32 bit you'd need to upgrade to 64 bit to utilize 4GB+

If you can afford a 460 over a 5770, the change in performance is justifiable, the 465 however I'm on the bench with, the shader clock is higher (in some cases they actually get beaten by superclocked 460s), so I'd just go for the 6870. It's a bigger difference then say the 470 over the 6870 (which simply rapes EVERY card on the market currently in crossfiring performance, with near 100% boosts in some cases as opposed to DX 9 cards that had 60% increases max.)

In it's own accord it is a lot for RAM. Like I said, 2GB is _FINE_. Unless you find a good deal. There's no reason to spend $45 more on something you do not need

Also DDR2 ram is still overpriced... Compare up prices from DDR2 ram to their close counterparts (in terms of clockspeed and size, really) to their DDR3 ones. DDR3 is running fairly cheap, so in my opinion, DDR2 is NOT a good buy because it's NOT the right time to buy the ram!

 

But really, 2GB is fine and can suit anybody well, I admit it's losing it's age but right now most games moreover require CPU rather than ram or gpu. also your link is down. I'd wait and see until DDR2 loses it's cost, or, like I said, find a nice deal.

What ever floats your boat jazy but on of my stick went bad and I used 2 GB for 6 moth fuck drove me nuts... multitasking, getting in and out of game took A LOT longer...

I dunno what to tell you. I use dual channel 2gb (800mhz) and it runs foobar + palemoon + steam + any game i usually play just fine. i have another 2gb stick that i mixmatch and it feels like performance drops and also the clockspeed needs to be adjusted to 667 due to the technically third stick being a lower set clockspeed.
