currently i'm working on my 3rd revision of my 3D game engine and SDK with DX10, WinSock2 and LuaBind

I just started takin my first programming class this semester. We're usin Visual Studio '05 for C++. We just learned arrays. Some of this shit takes me quite a bit to wrap my head around like making diamond shapes with asterisks using for loops.

 

How different is C++ from other languages? Like when I finally master C++, would learning java come really easy?

What C++ IDE's do you all use? I'm using Code:blocks currently on Windows and on Ubuntu.

 

I use Netbeans . Also tried coding flash games in AS 2.0, now moved to AS 3.0. Shit is quite complex..

I'll be able to help out with the coding side later on into dev! I'm going to study C++/Java and object orientated programming (As well as other things!)

 

I was also learning java on youtube and had my own compiler, it did the trick

The one we use at school is devc++ but I doubt its good compared to compilers you guys have listed.

 

I used to use devc++ for compiling. Not for writing unless I was being lazy because it has no syntax highlighting, and it auto indents, but then doesn't un-indent so the code ends up looking like complete trash. So I would code in jEdit and compile with devc++ but then I just downloaded and got mingw working, so I just have that compiler bound with macros through jEdit plugin "Console"

True, true, but I just learn things over time, the same way I did with mapping. I work on things, then when it goes beyond my ability I research how to do it and then try to implement it. Trial and error If I wanted to straight up read for hours on how to do it yeah I guess a book, but I like to attempt implementation so that I know I understand how to do it properly.

At any rate, honestly I can't even stress how awesome it is. jEdit+MinGW binds to compile/run.

 

It's hard to compile multi-file programs, but if it's all in one file, I LOVE it.. But jEdit is for Java and that's why there's no c/c++ compilers for it
