over the past2weeks my computer has been crippled.. after doing everything I could software/os is concerned, I then llooked inside my case and saw my heatsink was COVERED with dust.... so I decided to take of the heatsink and clean it. The thermal compund is at least 5yearolds so I am gonna redo it. I already cleaned the cpu/heatsink with rubbing alcohol.. but I have heard it is hard to spread new thermal compound easily.... what is the best way to spread it evenly? Any tips?

THANKS!!

Edit:

The compound is Antec silver compound (formula 5)

Sorry if there is spelling mistakes. did this omg droid :)

the way ppl told to do is put like a pea sized drop in the center , then put ur heatsink and rotate it to spread the compound. alot of diffrent methods. but i heard this was the best.

Don't use your heatsink to spread the paste, that's for sure. Like Daze said, use a plastic card / ruler and use clean strokes (you want a very thin, and smooth layer of paste) to spread it.

Old credit cards/gift cards work really well.

derp. than i did it wrong

Actually, most websites and people on tech support forums suggest the pea method. ArticSilver themselves also reccomend that method. I applied the ArticSilver5 paste that way and it works great.

He is only doing it wrong because he is smearing it with the heatsink.... which will make it more uneven. A pea size is proper; smearing it with your heatsink is not.

ya i put a pea amount size on my cpu.. squashed it with my heatsink THEN i used a credit card to make sure its even... My temps have defiantly improved and my computer runs better.

Well as much as I don't approve of "squashing" anything in relation to heatsinks, I'm glad that it fixed your problems :)
