What is it?

Steam Gamers Scrim League is where members of the community compete in teams in scrim-style CSS. This particular tournament is a 3v3, double elimination tournament. Mainly, it's a test run for the 5v5 I plan on hosting in the summer. This will let us know what to add, change, expect, etc.

It will be held in a separate League server which will have 6 slots including SourceTV so other members of the community (or competing teams!) can watch the matches.

Do I get to pick my team?

In this particular tournament, the teams are going to be entirely randomized. This is to ensure we can be as fair as possible, and it promotes a greater challenge: playing with people you normally would not play with. There will be 10 teams of 5 players, 3 'players' and 2 'substitutes'. Out of the players in your team, you will have to elect your own Captain to determine practices, strategies, and who plays in each match. Specific playing rules will be covered further below.

What do you mean "Substitutes"?

As explained below, only 3 players per team can be playing at one time. However, there are two standby players. These players can either do nothing and not participate in the match, or the captain can have people rotate throughout the match as many times as he/she likes.

Nothing will be halted when substituting players. The game will continue as normal while Captains swap out players. For this reason, it is imperative that the Captain be sure they know what they're doing when players are swapped.

Only 3 players per team will be allowed in-game at one time. If for some reason there are less than 3 players able to show to their scheduled match, a team may play with less than 3. If no one on from a team shows within 15 minutes of the time scheduled, it will be declared a forfeit.

Who starts on CT first?

Typically, the 'Home' team starts on CT and the 'Away' team starts on T. It will be randomly selected who will be 'Home' and 'Away' every match. The reason we aren't knife fighting for it is because this will ensure people aren't going to dick around and matches start on time.

How are matches going to be scheduled?

The Captains of the teams who are playing against each other will work out what time works out the best. Matches must be scheduled reasonably in advanced between XeNo or myself, preferably 24 hours prior.

The reason for this, is so that every match will be announced and spectators can connect to the SourceTV to watch the match.

What are the rules?

Rules specific to this tournament and rules that apply to all matches in this tournament are as follows:

-It is the Team Captain's responsibility to schedule matches in a reasonable amount of time, and inform either Xeno or Caution when the match is scheduled for. Please consult your team to find what time works best for them and work it out with the other team.

-This tournament is a double elimination tournament, meaning once you lose two matches, your team is out of the tournament. This also means your team can lose once and still have a shot at winning in the Top 3.

-Before the match can start, both Team Captains must take screenshots of status in console to validate SteamID's. In the event of a substitution, please take another screenshot of the SteamID's. If a match is started, or substitution is made with a player not belonging to that team's roster, and is proven by screenshot of steamid, that team will be disqualified from the tournament and the match win will automatically go to the other team.

-Once all players are present for a match, Captains must both announce their team is ready before LO3 is initiated. This is to be done at the start and once again at half time. Captains, ensure your team is ready to play the full match before announcing you are ready. There will be no pauses or re-LO3's issued once both teams are readied up until half-time/end of the game.

-Each match in this tournament will have a mm2 (Message Mode 2) rule. This means while a match is live, teams may only use team chat. Do not use all chat at any point during the match, this is to prevent excessive shit-talking and make teams focus on themselves. Only Captains may use all chat to announce substitutions and any emergencies/issues.

-During a match, no player may exploit in any way, this includes (but isn't limited to) standing on invisible ledges, glitching so you can see through a solid object/wall, having your graphic settings set in a way that is considered cheating
(Ambient occlusion, being able to see through smokes is not allowed)
, nade spamming, putting objects on top of a planted bomb, boosting using nades, and includes bunny hopping.
Normal player boosting is allowed, but air boosting is not.

-Absolutely no cheating is tolerated, if any member is caught cheating they will be banned from all SG servers and you will be disqualified from the tournament.

-If you believe a team is exploiting or a member is cheating,
do not stop the match
. Please continue to play out the match, and report what you believe they did in a PM to either Xeno or me. We will review the SourceTV demo and deal with it accordingly.

-Any member of any team caught exploiting/cheating using one of the mentioned ways (or any way else that is determined by Xeno or myself) will be disqualified from the tournament, and the match they exploited will be counted as a win for the other team, regardless of score.

Are there going to be prizes/rewards?

Yes, there will be prizes for the Top 3 teams in the tournament:

First Place:
50,000 SG Store credits to
every
member of the team, as well as free Supporter status to anyone who doesn't have it. They will be also given a tournament-winning title on all servers. (Much like the
title on servers)

Second Place:
25,000 SG Store credits to
every
member of the team, as well as free Supporter status to any member who doesn't have it.

Third Place:
10,000 SG Store credits to
every
member of the team.

First Place Prize Winner: Grape Drank

Second Place Prize Winner: Team One

Third Place Prize Winner: TEAM PINK

Teams were randomized, and are as follows:

Team Captains will be highlighted and Team names will be updated as Captains provide the information.

Not sure why this wasn't done in a normal draft. You gave people less than a day to understand the rules of it. Assuming this is going to last ~1 month I think it's worth it to try to make balanced teams even if it takes days.

edit: Also I doubt people are too happy about a 3v3 tounament Most of the people here aren't afaik customed scrimmers and if they have scrimmed they've gotten used to 5v5. In a 5v5 tournament theres much less pressure for invidual players and if you're really self conscious it might deter you from playing that many games. A 3v3- tourny will no doubt bring the best team more accurately to the number 1 spot but 5v5 is probably going to be much more entertaining overall.

And to add to my original post it's going to be hard to motivate teams to play if they already think they're not going to win from the start and if they think the motion of randoming teams is unjust.

First of all, Xeno and I explained numerous times repeatedly in two different threads how a draft works (which isn't even CSS related, a draft is a pretty common thing to know). Sorry, but I'm not spending DAYS explaining to people how to count to ten and understand what order they are in.

Doesn't matter what way you do it - there is never going to be perfectly balanced teams, and any further involvement would require further subjectivity from Xeno and myself, which still is going to look either biased or just wrong from somebody else's viewpoint. No matter what we do there is absolutely no way to ensure complete fairness, so I took all the names and completely randomized the list, and each player was assigned to their respective team based on the number group they had.

With the roster we had it would be a statistical impossibility to balance teams unless we did it manually ourselves, which means people would still be upset.

Keep in mind that this is a 3v3 tournament, not 5v5. This means typically in a scrim one team of 3 people are going against one player at a bombsite (possibly two). You take time to practice a strategy and learn that you can't just bullhead charge into a bombsite, and you still stand a chance at winning even if the team you're playing against has individually better skilled players. You just have to work better as a team.

The point of this is to figure out what to change and adjust for the 5v5 tournament which will be a much bigger deal, more competitive, and potentially better prizes.

Edit:

Once the league server is up, Teams can schedule to have an hour at a time of practice where the server will be locked and they can practice strategies. Please contact Caution or myself if you are interested in scheduling a practice session for your team, what day and time you would like, and we will have a separate thread detailing this schedule and available times which we will keep updated.

Xeno Caution Sebaka and Joe on the same team.

Dat randomizer.

Also random =/= Fair, lol, I don't really care that they are random but to call it fair would kind of be not true at all.

As stated, fairness is a statistical impossibility given the roster. Out of the 10 teams, there was probably going to be at least 3 or 4 easily overpowered teams. Making it very difficult for any other team to get second or third place.

You see it as one team overpowered, I see it as the rest of the teams being easier to compete for second/third place prizes, because one of those four people won't even be playing in the matches. It's double elimination, and stranger things have happened. It's also 3v3 lol.

I beat BoM/Banana Joe/Sebaka(I think?) in a pug who also had other fairly decent players with my best pick being Spartan.

That's why you just keep it draft. There's no point in looking forward to a competition if you just get slotted in with random people and there's one group you know that's going to steamroll everyone. I'm pretty sure every single person besides the members on team 1 right now is laughing at the way the teams turned out.

I mean if you want to have a good tournament, you actually have to put time and effort into making a roster that isn't a complete clusterfuck by choosing captains of similar skill level, and having them pick. I mean you pretty much agree with me in the fact that you said "teams being easier to compete for second/third place prizes" lol. There's no legit competition where people go "Bro I hope I get second place since I already know who's getting first". It's not fun at all and the only outcome I see from this is people being discouraged from the actual 5v5 scrim when you guys steamroll everyone and they don't give a shit anymore afterwards.

But like I said, do as you will, the only point I was trying to make in the first place was the way you chose to roster the teams clearly isn't fair in any sense of the word as it was used to describe in the original post. You can't say cancer/disease is fair because it's not biased in its choice (genetics aside), and it's even more apparent in the fact that this is a team game.
