According to Business Insider, Spotify will compete head on with the likes of Netflix and HBO Go by providing original content as well as access to a library of other content. Spotify has picked up some substantial investment from companies such as Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs, but is still having a hard time turning a profit. Spotify does not own its content, but rather pays record labels for access to their songs. This model is increasingly hard to manage for Spotify, as prices for access to songs climb as Spotify’s popularity rises. A variety of other music streaming services are bidding for the same access, thusly allowing the record labels to charge whatever they see fit. Netflix has faced similar problems, with movie studios charging high prices for content, leaving Netflix with a small profit margin. Netflix decided to make original content in an attempt to woo more users and increase profits, releasing its original series House Of Cards last year. Whether the original content model will pay off however, remains to be seen. Production costs of original series are expensive to produce, but Netflix and now Spotify are investing now for the hope of more subscribers in the future source: Spotify to Stream Movies, Create Original Content Link to comment

If they stream movies, might end up canceling my netflix sub. Link to comment

And i think spotify can beat netflix because they have been in the business longer and have more money to spend on contracts with all the different companies. Link to comment

But if Spotify really does get this new service, it's most likely not gonna be featured in the premium package, thus probably costing the same as having Spotify + Netflix, give or take. And well, they've been in the music business a longer time, but not the movie/film business. But eh, guess we'll just have to wait and see! But knowing Spotify and generally everything, it's probably not available in Denmark till 2020 or something... Link to comment

You never know, spotify is swedish, but as always america get's everything first, and europe years behind as usual. I think that if spotify intend to fight for netflix's customers they won't make the full price for music and movies the same as for a spotify premium and netflix user. Between 20 and 26 dollars for spotify "music and films" would be a good deal. But would ofc need a web service like netflix have so that you don't need the software or app to stream movies if they want to make it as accessible as netflix. Link to comment

Crazy Swede Posted April 2, 2013 Content Count: 1719 Joined: 09/14/10 Status: Offline Share Posted April 2, 2013 It took years for Spotify to make profit. Besides the record labels; they also have a lot of investors who wants their fair share you know. They also had some MAJOR issues to get themselves introduced in the American market. They almost actually launched Spotify in U.S.A back in 2009, but Apple managed to convince a major part of the record labels how their concept was a bad idea, how it would only increase piracy etc... etc... Eventually they managed to get established in U.S.A... but it was a tough fight. And it will be excactly the same if they try it with movies. All the compeeting companies will do everything they can to stop Spotify from getting any contracts from movie companies. Frankly, they will probably start like they started Spotify. First in Sweden and England, then France, Netherlands. Eventually USA. But at the end of the day, some competition is always good for us customers and I welcome it, as long as they don't jeopardize Spotify itself and goes bankrupt. Link to comment
