My first JB map and its actually quite nice imo o.O

Alright, well I played around in it for a couple of minutes and looked at the pictures. There's no way this is going to make it on the server, sorry to break it to you.

 

- The lighting is almost nonexistent. Add a lot more light fixtures with their own lights and just make it brighter in general (it's wayyy to dark)

 

- The textures are very poorly picked. The brick should be switched with some sort of concrete or metal for the cells and a lot of the textures for buttons etc are stretched and not properly used

 

- The armory is poorly designed. CTs can easily fall to their deaths as they might not use the ladder to climb down the hole. Guns should be static rather than just all over the place on the little platform (you can do this in hammer) and there should be a better design overall for the CT spawn

 

- The cells themselves are way too big and should be more lively. Only having a toilet isn't great, so add either a plant for some, garbage cans, beds, bathtubs, desks, something to make it better. Try to choose an overall theme for the map and stick with it throughout

 

- The soccer field has horrible lighting. As I said before, get a light_environment and tinker with it to get a good light level and look/feel. Try to make the shape better and add some stands and decorations.

 

- The sign on the side with the map name is poorly made. Search Youtube on how to create letters and shapes in Hammer for guidance. If you can't find any, post in the maps section to see if anyone can help you.

 

 

 

There are more things than what I've said, but you got the gist I hope. This map isn't close to being release-ready, so take some time to learn how to use tools better in Hammer and watch tutorials for tips and tricks. Also, I recommend posting in the Mapping section here with a WIP thread so people can give suggestions and offer their guidance. There are also many threads that help with things like optimization and map performance, among other things.

 

For now I don't think this is ready. If you need help with mapping, I'm rusty but can always lend a hand. :cool:

Thanks for the tips. I'm not too sure how to redesign the CT spawn as thats what a panopticon jail looks like. Also, the theme of the map is supposed to be dark and depressing, I don't want it to be luxurious.

I really do like this map, but I feel if you were to take my suggestions and update it, that it would be a lot better and I could see it being on the rotation. There are only a few problems in around 4 certain areas within the map, and I'll explain each and a possible solution to them.

 

 

1) Soccer:

 

In soccer, the ball barely moves, even a grenade doesn't send it that far. If you can, please fix the ball so it can move a lot faster. Also, I suggest you add two things. One of them being a wall that people can walk through but not the ball, because you can get the ball out of soccer, and it looks as if it will be a pain getting it back in. And the other thing is, most soccer fields on PB maps have a certain teleport that is activated when the ball goes into the net. Also, if you could have something that keeps score too, it wouldn't hurt.

 

2) LR Room:

 

I feel as if the LR room is fine, except for the deagle toss ramp. I know I had asked you to make the ceiling a bit higher, but you also made the ramp very low. If you could raise the ramp a bit more, that would be great. The ramp should be high enough that you can toss your gun while jumping and not have it bounce off the ceiling. The height of the ramp on this map will be shown below.

3) Ventilation System:

 

Basically, I do like the idea of have a vent, but there are a few problems with it. First off being that the vent is really long, and I don't see that so much as a problem. The only reason I am referring to it is because you have to crouch through the long vent. If you're gonna make it the vent long, you should at least make it high enough that you are able to run through it, or you can make it short enough to crouch through and not take forever. Also, the vent is very very dark, and although we have nightvision, it still can be way too dark in there. If you could use a different material to make the vent, that would be great. Some screenshots of the vents will be shown below.

4) Isolation:

 

The only thing wrong with isolation is the double doors. I feel having the double doors is a pain in the ass because it looks bad and also, they open one at a time, and it goes by pretty slow. If you could make the left-most door as shown in the screenshot below a wall, that would make it be a lot better. Also, if you could somehow put a hidden button in the top corner of isolation so that T's can escape while being trapped inside, that would also be great.

Basically, if you hit all of those points listed above, I don't really have a problem having this map on the server. I hope you take my suggestions and fix them! Either way, good work on this Sleggie!

Ok, I see what you mean. There could definitely be better way of designing the interior though even if the structure stays relatively similar. Also, dark and depressing != no visibility. There are ways to use lighting to make a map both visible for players but still encapsulating that dark and foreboding theme. Hit me up on steam when you are working on it and I can help you with both of these.

This right here. Lighting makes or breaks maps most of the time. You can still add lights while maintaining a dark theme. Even adding lights with a gray hue to them will help brighten the map a little.
