I talk a lot because I like the sound of my own voice, so I'm assuming that everyone else does as well. plus I sound smexy

sounding like an old old old old old old old old person does not = smexy.

+rep for the laugh.

Anyway, I tend to have little patience with people who use the mics for nothing other than say stupid things - mainly due to the fact that every night I have to listen to it through the wall seperating mine and James' bedrooms.

The latest one was "*loud grunt noise* look at those shotguns skills! *cackle*"

..It's so depressing...

Do you even play on the servers Havok?

I don't have a problem with people talking in game. I mean it sort of depends on the game. If you're playing a match of CS:S then keep off the mic unless there's a reason to use it. If you're playing a pub game or gun game or something then a little chatter isn't that bad, but it's still a fairly competitive game. If you're playing ZM or Death Run or something similar then meh. They're social games and not that competitive, so I don't see a problem with chatter. If you start talking about your day when I'm trying to cap the bridge in Sinjar I'll probably TK you though =P.

Basically the more competitive the game the less unrelated chatter there should be. However, that's not the only problem. Constant chatter in a social game isn't bad because people are talking, it's bad because it's hard as hell to understand. The three things that drive me up the wall are:

1. The voice volume. It's a continuum from barely audible to clipping. I'm unable to hear one guy so I turn my headphones up a bit then my ear drums get blasted out by someone transmitting at 130dB. That sort of thing just really drills into your skull and gives you a throbbing headache. I'd prefer it if ValvE improved the system so the voices were played within a certain bounded volume range and attenuated everything outside of it. That way if some 14 year old decides he absolutely must scream into the mic with his prepubescent voice then I won't go deaf and likewise I'll be able to hear someone with a quiet mic without adjusting my overall volume.

2. Everyone talking at once. Assuming that I don't get a buffer overflow from so many people talking and my sound doesn't cut out then I'll just hear static. Four people talking at once is the best way to assure none of you are heard or understood. In game voice really needs a priority queue for talking tbh.

3. Speakers. Fucking speakers. Please do me a favor and get a set of headphones. Feedback loops are very unpleasant to listen to and cause me to grind my teeth. I don't care if your speakers cost $12,000 a piece, get some headphones. They're better for gaming anyway.

So I guess too much chatter is when one of the above three things happens (assuming it's a social type game).
