Any tips on how my fingers should be positioned or anything? I'm not really interested in playing with a pick Link to comment

Was going to recommend Rocksmith as a decent tool to self teach, but it mostly just shows you how to play a song. Justinguitar is a really good place to start. Every you look online, people praise his course. He starts you off at the bare basics and then goes on from there. I started and got about halfway through his course when I just kinda stopped playing as much. Will prob repair my guitar one day and get back to it. 1 Link to comment
Guest harro
If you're not planning on picking, I'd recommend starting out with a classical book to get good positioning and fundamentals before you get comfortable. If you have the money, nothing really beats a good tutor. Link to comment

Blasé Posted February 7, 2016 Content Count: 88 Joined: 12/18/13 Status: Offline Share Posted February 7, 2016 just try and learn simple rythmic strumming first. tempo is the most important thing if you want to sound good. get a good feel of the guitar and try to play chords before trying to learn fingerpicking. I played guitar for 7 years and I learned fingerpicking in the last year, and I must say, it was kinda like learning guitar for the first time again. Also, do you have any artists in mind? so i can get a better understanding of what style your aiming for. 1 Link to comment

Well, this guy has more lead-style guitar playing, as opposed to some folk guitarists (more pattern-based finger picking). But you can see he still uses his thumb as bass (6th string) and plays the melody with the middle and index finger on the higher strings/notes. I would suggest learning guitar scales, like a blues scale for example, and move on to others; pentatonic, dorian, etc. I started learning finger picking with guys like Leonard Cohen (Suzanne) and Dave Van Ronk (Green Green Rocky Road). I think, after a while, the most important thing is to jam out and have fun, even if it sounds bad. Link to comment
