[Rank Suggestion] Reintroduce Mapping on SG

This is just my own opinion but if we have a mapper rank it would be a lot like the mapper award people might be motivated to make a map or two, but it wont motivate people to keep making maps. While making contests for mapping seems like a good idea, stuff like that never seems works out well at SG, I don't know if its because the time frame we give or just nobody tends to be interested.

Just my two cents, I don't think a rank is necessary. A recognition I am fine with, but we got so many damn ranks around here its a pain in the ass to design the website. Also, anyone deserving of anything like this IMO would be required to submit more than just one map and mapping takes time. If someone is dedicated enough to do this fair game, but I doubt any one who is lurking here has the time/dedication/skills to do so.

You just need to take a look at other big communities like Mapeadores, Plague Fest or Unloze. Every single one got their mapper rank and with that rank they also have a certain ammount of active mappers within the community.

Also, anyone deserving of anything like this IMO would be required to submit more than just one map and mapping takes time.

I am not sure if you referring to me, but I already submitted more than one big map to SG. But as you already said...mapping takes time.

It´s kind of dissapointing, to hear this from someone in the head-department. If there would be more overall support/rewards, I am sure things could change and your opinion wouldn´t be that pessimistic.

Would love to see more mapping support on here! As much as I love hoodrat, I think I could have done a much better job/i'm trying to find ways to improve it.

Some kind of competition or even just a theme for mappers to work towards could be cool.

That being said, I think it might be tough to motivate non-mappers or people who don't really have an interest in mapping to start. It's not like minecraft or the old forge mode in Halo 3, the Hammer editor is a fickle and scary beast to new users. If you're not already at least a little bit interested in this sort of thing, it's tough to just jump into. Before working with Hammer I spent a good chunk of my childhood player Unreal Tournament and mapping in that game. None of those maps were even close to good, but it's something I was naturally drawn towards and find enjoyable. I don't think most people would find the process fun.

I think you've misunderstood my entire opinion on this matter.

You just need to take a look at other big communities like Mapeadores, Plague Fest or Unloze. Every single one got their mapper rank and with that rank they also have a certain ammount of active mappers within the community.

My point here is that we don't need to have a rank for people to do this. Yeah other communities do it, but that doesn't mean we have to.

I am not sure if you referring to me, but I already submitted more than one big map to SG. But as you already said...mapping takes time.

No I was not referring to you, or anyone. Until today (when someone told me about you) I had no clue who you are. The point I was making is that most people who are on this site and visit us, just want to play the games. In my time, I've ran into only a handful of mappers.

It´s kind of dissapointing, to hear this from someone in the head-department. If there would be more overall support/rewards, I am sure things could change and your opinion wouldn´t be that pessimistic.

Again, I was expressing my opinon in this matter. Which is part of my job around here. Sometimes I endorse ideas that I think have real merit and then I'll be vocal about ideas I am not excited about. I'm not afraid to tell someone their idea isn't the best. However, I try to point out where the idea needs improvement most of the time. Which does not turn me to be a pessimistic, yes my view point is negative and not in your favor, but I'm far from a pessimistic.

My point wasn't to shit on your idea, it never is. I am not against a reward system. If we come up with some form of reward other than a rank, I will more than likely back it. However, just handing out ranks is something I do not support (I obviously am not speaking on behalf of the others on the board).

When you compare us to almost any other community, we have an incredibly simple hierarchy structure. Most of the communities I see have ranks for every possible little thing. The problem is not only that it looks cluttered, but also the amount of time behind creating a rank. Creating a rank usually is not simply 'give them a name and a color', but usually requires hours of discussions and multiple forum threads, ranging from here in public, the CA section, the AO section, and all the way up to the BD section. Do they get extra server abilities? Extra forum abilities? What do we allow them to do? All these questions may not apply to this specific rank suggestion, but hopefully kind of clears up why we usually avoid just creating ranks to honor a few select people that don't actually hold any extra powers or access rights.

I'm not against rewarding people or giving people recognition, but I don't think creating a rank solely for mappers is the right way to go at this time. We'll probably be bringing this up at our next meeting, so thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I'm going to try and draw this to a middle ground here, or at least draw a middle line. None of these ideas are my own, just taken from this thread and reworded.

People (MrMuesli, LampShade, All Ts) want to see more mapping in the community, however they understand that it requires motivation to do mapping. The SG staff are willing to reward mappers and are capable. SG (as a business, not the community) doesn't want to add a new rank to reward mappers, but that's not the only way to show recognition to mappers.

SpikedRocker introduced the idea that recognition takes effort, and that the amount of recognition received should be dependent on the effort given.

Now, here is my idea. We (SG as a community) have the rank Honorable Gamers. The tag is described as "players that have contributed more than the average player". This could be the rank given to /devoted/ mappers.

Or, alternatively, submitted maps can be seen as effort put forth in improving and advancing our servers and our community as a whole, therefore, the staff could grant months of sub per map accepted.

Just some food for thought.

Simple, instead of a rank. Give them one of those reward things below your avatar.

Ex.) Map Maker.

Its orange or yellow with some symbol on it.

Map making takes time and dedication and if the player wants to make a map then props to them but I don't think they should get anything more than a regular member or a subscriber.

The only thing I could think of would be a cool cosmetic item in the !store
