What’s the point of spending money to make a number that does nothing go up? I’m genuinely asking.

If they can afford it, why not? It's the same thing as gun skins. Those do nothing and can sell for a ton of money. It's just another thing to brag about and/or collect and improve. Some people like collecting stamps, other people like to collect Steam levels. As long as they aren't putting themselves in a poor financial situation I see nothing wrong with it. Who knows, maybe Valve/Steam will eventually do something with it.

I just used the money/keys I earned from trading/betting back in the day, I spend a lot of time on steam and it looks nice.

Well i actually managed to get my levels pretty cheap as i started leveling up before it became like a huge thing around steam it eventually skyrocketed and prices went up a lot so then i stopped but i do plan on getting more levels sooner or later.
