TO think how fast we may move forward with space travel now that SpaceX has made it to space. http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/09/space-x-did-it.html Link to comment
SpikedRocker Posted September 29, 2008 Content Count: 6242 Joined: 04/13/08 Status: Offline Share Posted September 29, 2008 IMO private space travel is kinda pointless. Its too expensive. For NASA to send up stuff it costs millions upon millions of dollars, even some cases billions. Honestly I think NASA needs to incorporate more of these private endevours to speed up our process on our Ares program that will facilitate our missions to Mars. Space tourism is good idea, but till space travel becomes more fesable I say we just need to work on our scientific missions. Link to comment

Seriously we went to the FUCKING MOON 40 years ago, what the hell, we've regressed, unacceptable. Looking back at the "Alien" films, they may have been right with having big "bad evil corporations" as the explorers/owners of space. Link to comment

Nowhere else to go right now besides anything near or around earth unless you want to send a few corpses of astronauts to Mars or other sight seeing destinations of our solar system. Link to comment

I don't see the need for defeating the soviets as the reason for pursuing space travel. It's rather that the Earth won't last forever and it would be nice to have many humans living elsewhere to keep humanity going and who knows what kind of minerals/materials we can get from other planets. In addition the technologies developed in our pursuit of space travel may benefit us all on Earth. But as you said, since there isn't a real space-race going on anymore, I'm glad the private sector has taken up the reins. Link to comment

Not saying you in particular, just that beating the soviets was the mindset behind whatever progress we made in space was decades ago. We are really far ahead compared to other countries in terms of space exploration. If any real advancement were to be made in that category, yes the private sector would need to have a hand in it. It would cost a lot of money that the government doesn't have. The government still needs to do what it is doing, but the private sector should have more of a role for the time being. Link to comment
