Pancake Batter Posted October 7, 2008 Content Count: 672 Joined: 03/20/07 Status: Offline Share Posted October 7, 2008 Just got myself a WD 640 GB hard drive and I realized that it doesn't use the same power connector as my older WD sata drive. I am wondering what cables I need for it (heard it uses the newer sata ones, but have no clue on what they are.) Here's a photo of the back : Any help would be appreciated. Link to comment

Just Bestbuy, and I know they'll jack up the prices to put it in, I just need to know what cable I need. Link to comment
BOOWY Posted October 7, 2008 Content Count: 868 Joined: 04/30/08 Status: Offline Share Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) I'm not good with hardware, and I'm not sure what the older connector is. I'm assuming the old one is a 4-pin. Someone more hardware friendly chime in here and see if this is indeed what he's looking for? http://www.xpcgear.com/cvt48.html http://www.orbitmicro.com/global/8pinfemaleto4pinmale12vpoweradaptercable-p-272.html EDIT: Nevermind, I think I'm wrong. But I think this is the kind of thing you'd be looking for anyway. This looks better than the first links I put up. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812887002 Edited October 7, 2008 by BOOWY Link to comment

I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be pins. Don't plug anything into the non-highlighted pins. Link to comment

Yeah, there were supposed to be pins in the red part, but I was told that Western Digital was no longer using that type of power connector and was using a different one. Link to comment
Zero001 Posted October 7, 2008 Content Count: 1230 Joined: 05/17/07 Status: Offline Share Posted October 7, 2008 You're right. I think it runs off of SATA power, which is the longer connector on the left. A WD Secure connect cable should do it or you can have them connected individually. Link to comment

Dark Torcher Posted October 7, 2008 Content Count: 240 Joined: 05/28/08 Status: Offline Share Posted October 7, 2008 wth are you talking about sata power plugs 4pin molex?? just hotwire the damn thing ~but yes it is a sata power plug, im sure you could have figured that out just by looking at the power cord and the drive, or by reading the instructions, etc etc, but if this turned out to be a bit hard for you to understand without resorting to asking, you may want to lay off the pc gadgets and just take it to best buy and get overcharged maybe by three-fold or more Link to comment
