According to her interview, no one recognized her until a police officer saw them under a bridge in Iowa, 100+ miles away from their original location.

 

Also, she said "she never meant to run away; she just wanted to comfort her boyfriend after a fight. He was having suicidal thoughts and believed his family wouldn't be there for him, so he relied on her."
