The shotgun was apparently loaded with birdshot, not buckshot. If you listened in the video he describes how he brushed the barrel of the shotgun away from his head, but some of the pellets from the spread still hit his head. If it was buckshot, it could have been a different story... Honestly though, this guy is very lucky to be alive, and will no doubt have trust issues for the rest of his life...
