ever consider that it is a server class processor which wont be dealing with the bottlenecks of home machines? not to mention the so called choke point of processor to memory (north bridge) has been moved to on die on both amd and intel giving 4+ gigs of transfer per second now on the i7's. so no having a multicore processor with over 4 cores isn't stupid, its what the server world and the video word and the high end number crunching and stats heavy worlds.. etc etc. have been asking for for decades. strong parallel processing to handle multiple read/write computations at once. something that home computers with the latest versions of both amd and intel socket architectures can handle bandwidth wise. why do you think there are eatx mobos with 4 individual processor slots on them along with each proc having its own dedicated memory slots. just because we dont use much of the raw processing power our home computers have, doesn't mean server/enterprise solutions dont need it. hell i am not surprised they are doign so many cores AMD with their opteron line has been killing intel in the server class market against the xeon until intel overhauled it to use on die memory controllers and much larger on die cache. the only reason we as personal pc users do not have multicore solutions as standard equipment is because no one is coding for them to be used properly. a few developers have, but the vast majority of games and productiviy suites work with 2 cores. video rendering and photoshop as well as maya and a few others do leaps and bounds better the more cores you throw at them, because they need the raw processing power to crunch numbers. the way things are going the bottleneck will be and is to a great extent the non solid state harddrive, being that SSD's are out but are expensive, means that bottleneck will also be fading out. once chips hit the moores law limit you will suddenly see every software package be coded for multicore usage. but now that there is no reason a typical home user doesn't need the power.

im not sure where you are coming from as far as the nvidia cards being better and similarly priced. an ati 4870 is comparable to a geforce 260 core 216. the ati card has better performance then the 216 at certain resolutions the 216 does better in others so depending on your monitors native resolution you may have better performance with one then the other. also depending on games. the ati 4890 is supposed to be up against the gtx 275 yet the 4890 is cheaper and just as powerful (price war is going on so that is debatable every day, but when they were offered initially the 4890 was 249.99 the 275 was 289.99). most of the so called benchmark results that use synthetics (3dmark, pcmark, sisoftsandra etc) are all constantly fighting with video card companies that try to tweak the card to specifically look at their card more favorably then is actually true so basing all your purchasing information off of those is flawed. would i turn someone away from nvidia, not at all, but if their gaming style and specs pointed them toward ati i certainly am not going to tell them they are wrong. its why reviews have multiple resolutions with multiple graphics settings and multiple games. so that people have a crosssection of how the cards play based on what they own, or close to it anyway. i game on a 27.5 inch monitor with a res of 1920x1200 with all my settings maxed on a ati 4890. why? because nvidia didn't have a card powerful enough at the time to handle those specs that wasn't another hundred dollars more expensive.( gtx 285) and the 275 didn't roll out til well after. and it was still more expensive then the 4890 i got (i paid 220 for mine shipped) as far as flagships, the 295 is the king of the stack and will remain so. I wont ever buy one because id rather buy a dx11 card and be happy with my monitor and settings then spend that much for not that much more perceived performance. maybe more eyecandy on in the latest games, but for how much longer is it gonna be better then the next 300 dollar card ? 12 months at most... maybe 6. If you have the coin and want to do so, by all means but id rather save and rebuy better later. no manufacturer has an oc friendly ironclad warranty that is in writing, period. not evga, not xfx, not sapphire, not ati or even nvidia themselves. you will find that they will cover it generally under the we don't mind that you do this, but there is no guarantee that they will cover it if you fry your card. even if you are dealing with evga (arguably the best in the business), as long as the damage could have occurred from something outside your control they will warranty, but if its obviously related to OC (soldered vmods etc) then no most of the time those are not covered. and you can get great us based ati card partners, so unless you hate xfx they do both now. sapphire is in California and a few others as well as ati themselves. again ive had cards from both sides, but i despise this constant annoyance of which side is better. for the longest time it was easy, ATI has the ability to do full screen anti aliasing and hdr, and nvidia couldnt, ergo if you wanted to run source games, you went ATI (3 years ago). that is actually still the case although not as noticeable, as the source engine is optimized for ati cards. where the quake engine and others based off it are nvidia based. as far as comparisons akaru, you would compare the same cards in the same price brackets, so the gtx 260 core 216 is comparable to the ati 4870 1gig etc. you do actually compare outside of the flagship product because less then 2% of the people buying video cards over the life of the product line are going to buy the flagships many of the old flagship cards were more expensive to make then they were being sold at, so it actually lost money, and they were simply bragging rights cards. made up for by selling more lower end cards overall. if you want to declare nvidia the winner based on flagship you would be right, if you want to tell me nvidia crushes ati across the board, you would get laughed out of any tech forum in the world. ati has solid wins or ties from the 250 dollar price point down, they wont go ultra high end (they say) anymore so i dont see them ever killing nvidias flagship card crown. but you bet nvidia has been stung deeply by ati's card offerings, otherwise we wouldn't see the core 216, or the 275gtx cards amongst others that were specifically launched to fill a hole ati was dominating until that point.

i can just see the tag now [legalsmash] rant rant rant, pointing out all your flaws, posting fact after fact after fact to make you realize how dumb you are, wrapping it up in a nice bow, serving it to you on a plate of fine china with garnish[/legalsmash]

but it isnt, depending on your budget and overall needs ati or nvidia may both have pros and cons to them. your monitors resolution your type and style of gaming, your budget, your other components, you amount of time to rebuy a newer card all come into play, and nvidia isnt the best in all of those cases. neither is ATI sorry

oh no xeno lots of ZM/sg people have and will in the future vent, but they will either A. expect flaming and did it for lulz. and b. frame it in a way that cannot be construed as needing to be smacked silly for whining about the good life having holes in it .... I have a fairly shitty life on the scale of most people in this community, that being said I know what I could have been and what i worked to overcome and still get hit with, so Ill be one of the last people whining about how bad things are. been there done that, and yet i know that there are people in far worse places then me. anyway for teh lulz i present to you the best song that has ever fit for this conversation.. watch and enjoy.

this here is why so many true tech enthusiasts facepalm. nvidia and ati go back and forth on who is better and for what reasons. nvidia has the best card on the market, but ati's saves you money for what most people is not a very noticeable difference. tbh they occupy different areas, ati offers (or tries to) performance per dollar spent savings. because their overhead doesnt allow them to see profits on the 600+ dollar video cards. so instead of fighting with nvidia and losing they simply made cards that could compete where people have more money, the 2-400 dollar market, in which area currently neither has an appreciable lead or advantage of the other. both companies give you a hell of alot for your buck these days. if you go back more then 2 -3 years ATI used to destroy nvidia and you'd hear people swearing by the 9800 cards all day. back then ATI actually did manage to pull a monster out of its hat. that all said, being a fan boy gets you very little from me as far as anything except a laugh when that person gets stuck with a crappy component because its from X company, they are better then Y in the past so i shouldn't ever pay attention and should just buy X all the time. want to know an nvidia fanboy? they are the people that shelled out big bucks on the fx5 series of cards and got the worst performance per dollar spent in near video card history. or the people who are swearing by sli architecture when crossfire scales much better overall... ATI was right behind them with the x1300 and x1500 cards too. and their major issues even getting a card that wasn't overpriced and underpowered in that era after the 9800s and x800s

the issues is that in some of the screens (the wow one in particular) some of teh shadows are continuing as if you cut and pasted the parts together and other screens are showing the border interfereing in part of the screen. either way it isnt something I would be using, short of having the frameless lcds and too much money, i would just use a projector and a 106" screen and game that way. tbh 28" (27.5")is about all the screen i can fit in view at a time without turning my head at sitting at desk distance. unless you were to back up in which case the projector again is a safer bet. either way its a cool concept and will be interesting to see how or if its adopted as far as any gaming is concerned (supcom esc or otherwise)

I will try more politely to state the more obvious points here. you have made some bad decisions, you are either A. frustrated because you know you did, or B. angry because you signed a contract and failed to read the fine print. and now that its time to stand up to obligations, you aren't willing to seek remedy. that sounds like more of a personal issue then anything. before anyone starts in on well your life is this and mine is that b.s. here are some facts for you. 1 unless your boss signed a contract with you that you have a copy of then it is easily possible to argue that is not binding, not to mention fraudulent. if that is the case simply go to his boss and report up the chain. and learn to say no. If you signed a contract, and you have a copy, read the terms and see what your options are. it doesnt matter if your "boss" paid your loan off or not, or w/e unless you signed a contract stating you will ignore your work agreement contract because of your loan, then he has no right to expect you to do anything beyond your stated hours. if you are a real idiot you signed on as salaried, which means you cannot make claim for overtime, but you are still entitled to mount the argument that you are overworked according to your contract. 2. your student loans credit cards w/e debt. student loans have a guaranteed clause in them stating a forebearence will be issued for a year if you meet certain criteria. depending on the forebearence, you may pay the interest that accrues, or your loan may pay that for you (through the government portion) either way its off the books for a year. if you do not meet those requirements, you can always work out a new pay schedule. takes about 1 hour on the phone and mailing/faxing copies of documents they require. hospital bills all have similar pay schedules that can help you ease the burden now and spread out payments so they are doable. their accounts number is on the bill and i strongly suggest you call and discuss with them your options. tbh while id prefer to have a legalsmash level bitch fest at you because 5 grand for a hospital visit is chump change. (covers my first 3 hours of a hospital visit if that) telling you I have it worse isn't gonna fix anything, and I'm not as much in it for "teh lols" . You may be the person who doesn't take time to read your paperwork, or ask questions about contract clauses. but rest assured once you sign them you are bound by them regardless of your understanding. you received paperwork stating what is and isn't covered, what networks of doctors, what procedures etc, I suggest you read it. and understand the limits of your health care. if nothing else simply to be informed before sticker shock hits in a letter. as for why legal seems frustrated with you , its because he has worked his ass off to get where he is and unfortunately the economy is not allowing him to find a job that offers any sort of stability. Not my place to go into details, but he isnt the only one here, and you better believe that any post coming across as "whiney", with all the crap this community has or is dealing with behind the forums veneer, is gonna trigger a landslide of fuck yous. honestly surprised there haven't been a lot more. you have a good life/health, a strong future in jobs and overall lifestyle with the degrees you have if you apply them, a future wife, and family that is still alive. what more do you really freaking expect in this day and age. I would be thrilled to have any of the above. much less all of them. if calling people and talking to accounts managers and bill collectors isn't your thing, you need to find a debt counselor who can help you walk the crap though and get you organized. no joke, life isn't ever gonna be easy, and no one promised you anything except you will die at some point. Everything else in between is yours to make or fail at.

there does not appear to be a blind spot either, but much like the martox dual head and triple head the "splitter" card referenced in the press release is probably deciding which screen gets which part, as well as the fact that several of the screen shots show that he images if cut out and pasted together would form a correct image "suggest" that there is no "blind spot" being created. that being said the upsizing the image and overall quality of the resolution is something that is not bein discussed because its likely just an expansion again on the matrox system. which in and of itself is avery good way to use multi monitors as a single large display, but id be more interested to see how many crossfired cards they are using into that splitter card to do 55 MP of resolution edit it appears they are using quad crossfired cards, but are they dual gpu per card or single gpu? its unlikely that current gen single gpu cards can handle that kind of resolution unless dx11 improvements really have made the drivers utilize all the memory correctly.

well either way, the IE breach was published about 4 -6 months ago though that means it has been known about for anywhere to a year or more. just that the black hats kept quieter about its availability longer then the usual time. and so white hats took a long time to come to a fix. the IE shell is integrated into steam so again i can easily see how he could have siphoned off steam user info or planted a keylogger with the injection. either way if anyone tries again put a block on firewall port 80 it will kill your net, but anything that is trying to report home will founder while you clean it up. -

injecting the code into the actual chat interface means you had something either off, or are using a program that is allowed root access with no restrictions. like running something as an administrator in the settings. not necessarily a risk in the real world, as the person who showed you their program likely knew you, and most people here run vent as administrator to remove some lag issues. and vent is not highly stable as a client system against injection attacks. or at least wasn't due to its hooks into your ethernet for constant data input/output. that and what you may have seen was a simply script kiddie injection system to exploit the big IE vulnerability a few months ago that simply allowed total computer control and since IE doesnt completely unbundle (thank god for win7 and unbundle) they simply could have used that based on your steam id and ip info which is broadcast. -

yes dracula because their active x controls /java controls download a virus in the background... if you watch anything or go to a website with your security not set to ask before downloading website content you download the virus. ergo if you have the right settings and the correct restrictions (dont use IE ) you can go damn near anywhere on the internet and catch no viruses, just don't click on any downloads. as far as the steam "virus" my understanding is that the data exchanged when handshaking the chat connection led to vulnerabilities in the overall steam clients memory usage allowing a program to "leak" out of that memory location and since steam was/is linked into IE for displaying content it also suffers from the same possible vulnerabilities that using the IE shell offers anyway. That pretty much died when Microsoft started using the null(data) execution bit protection that simply locks off the memory from system critical processes when leaks occur. its not fool proof, but you would have to circumvent specific areas and have a good idea of another program with root access you could take over to inject code if you wanted to infect through steam, which is much harder then it sounds. most computers now do not allow any naked access to the root unless you disable null execute and other routines. -

My laptop can't defrag itself
topic replied to Jager's VirDeBello in Tech Talk
you can try compressing some of your files to free up space if you are not in a position to get an external hdd, that being said you might try to track down an old copy of executive softwares diskkeeper, or the trial anyway It would defrag as much as it could regardless of space and wasnt much more of a load on the system tehn standard win defragging. -
its not that the cards run or dont run akaru, its that randomly for reasons that should have never been allowed to leave the manufacturing floor, hundreds of thousands to millions of chips will up and die at a random time way before typical service end date ( approximately ten years is the general standard). that is an issue that anyone long term reliability are really pissed about (businesses anyone and everyone was affected). not to mention any laptop owner with any nvidia chip for the past years. which almost cost Apple an entire product line of laptops worth millions. oh the xbox crashing? one of the many red rings of death was nvidia chips with this issue. adding up the xboxes alone that crashed is simply staggering. and its all because someone decided to cut a corner, then lied about it until someone else cut a mac motherboard in half and sent to to be electron microscope scanned to prove the bad engineering. I dont really care that my card died, I got another under warrenty, nor that the rma's etc for so many other parts and such, but every mac, dell, HP , and their various subsidiaries (xfx evga, etc) are all carrying around defective hardware if they have any nvidia parts for the past 3-4 years. those are the largest OEM's in the world atm and they all cant guarantee your card working for its intended lifespan because some engineering idiot failed to read the data on 2 parts. and if your card fails under normal use its generally well outside its warrenty , so any poor sod who got "unlucky" is out another card or mobo or entire laptop. I do hope yours wont fail, as that is a royal pain in the ass, you can keep them alive longer by not shutting down your pc as much, or if you do, leaving it off for a long time period in between shutdowns and startups. the heating and rapid cooling of the chips is what breaks the pins and causes the failure.
-
honestly with them being that close go with whichever mobo you like better or he likes better. you aretn gonna get much better then that very easily.
-
they are both good companies, you need to decide if either have missing options your friend must have, otherwise go with the cheaper. you wont be let down by asus or gigabyte in general they are top notch companies.
-
you really should go digging for the various articles on the issues the various news about all the macs and dells failing last year and the deal nvidia inked with the OEMs to minimize the damages before anyone knew the real costs to save themselves going bankrupt. total cost was a few hundred million when the real price on chips if a true recall was handled was over 2 billion dollars here I shall save you some digging http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mobile/display/20090811124335_Sony_Nearly_Secretly_Admits_Flawed_Nvidia_Graphics_Chips_Are_Inside_Vaio_Notebooks.html http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10119277-64.html http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1013947/nvidia-should-defective-chips http://techreport.com/discussions.x/15720 http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-GPU-failure,6248.html http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/39263/118/ I also ran a major hardware review site for several years, so while the general public wasn't informed loudly, Most IT staff and network people knew. My contacts at nvidia confirmed the issue and I can even explain it if you want me to save you some article reading above. and yes i have had a nvidia card fail for tha reason as well as diagnose about 45 laptops a slew of desktops and ive lost count of the many motherboards that have been defective.
-
well both vid cards have a good warrenty, so if you prefer evga then go with them, assuming the usual scenario, you will get roped into helping fix stuff so might as well know go with companies you like. assuming an 800 dollar rig i can see a bare bones i7 happening with a 216 vid card maybe, but assuming you want a gaming rig, with new drives and such its probably better to go 9550. that being said watch the deals on systems off tigerdirect newegg zipzoomfly.com etc before you buy to make sure as some of the back to school deals are ridiculous. and then score the vid card you want on top of them.

internet keeps disconnecting
topic replied to Jager's Shower Fart in Tech Talk
if you are getting disconnected at certain times then you may have an issue with the router being overloaded with household "noise" on the channel it is broadcasting wirelessly on. (if you have a wireless capable router) if you do try changing the wireless channel to a lower frequency in the wireless settings. certain manufacturer set frequencies are also the ones your microwave and phones usee . so your neighbors heating up a midnight snack can fry your net as your router thinks it is getting data and instead is trying to process "noise" if you post your model router i can help further probably
