what is your airflow scheme? how many fans? what is your case model?

did you check to see if the gpu heat sink was damaged, or knocked loose? some video cards use plastic clips to hold the heat sink assembly. If it has been knocked loose, you may be able to "pop" the clips back in place.

ibm thinkpads, (especially pre- t31 series) are notoriously difficult to repair. The other issue you will run into is that thinkpad's generally are not upgradeable, you can increase the ram (withen a bios limitation) and the hard drive space, but everything else is fixed at that model's design. I will have to say though, you can take a 6 year old thinkpad that works, install a recent linux distro, and it will make a great web browseing machine (some of the 12" models work better then any recent "netbook").

Make sure to run the 64-bit version if at all possible. supurisingly windows 7 runs best with 64 bit mode. if you have some 32-bit only programs, microsoft also has the virtual pc thing out for free, that puts a windows xp vm in your os (kind of like when macs had "classic mode for mac os X/9"

Warning, windows 7 is buggy with ati hd4xxx series cards right now. I would advise sticking with the microsoft provided driver for ati cards at the moment

you could always buy a usb mic set. those will work in just about any consumer pc.

would you be able to download the hiren utility cd and boot from that? I could walk you through some hardware diagnostics over vent or instant message.

if your willing to spend $100 more dollars, the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 would be a great choice.. 12" screen, and based on nvidia ion (intel atom + nvidia igp) you *could* get 30-40 fps on counter-strike with that. I had one of the 9" msi netbooks, but sold it because keyboards that small will cause you to hunt and peck.

I bought the G1 last week, and it's great. Previously I had the htc touch, hacked to run android os. I can tell you, not having a physical keyboard sucks. From what I understand, the G2 lacks a keyboard. Some of the legacy apps in the app store also won't work on the new G2 for the moment. one example of that, I play doom on my G1 all the time. Trying that without the keyboard would be impossible.

the old AT style ibm clones are nice for that tactile feedback, the logitech's with the build in lcd are good if you like messing with the scripting engine. I've seen those show stats polled off of games directly.
