And Nvidia handles stream processors a bit differently (think quality over quantity, vs ATi with they're 3200 stream processor cards and watnot) The highest end Nvidia card gets about as many hashes as the lowest ATi card.

I myself mined, and sold my cards in the end (Could've had a $1500 profit, but I sold at the wrong time and only made $800) Difficulty is a "security" measure to make sure that a block is found every 10 minutes, if not, every 2160 blocks, the difficulty will raise/lower to compensate. Higher difficulty = more time, but most of the time, it's negligible since price usually follows difficulty. In the end, buying can get you the farthest, but mining is great if you have the hardware.
