I had 3 people under Invitations when steam friends were restored. Turns out they were all people who didn't lose their friend list. Now they had me on their friend list, but I still had them under invitations, so I deleted them and tried to re-add them, which left me with a "X is ignoring you" message which is apparently a "anti spam" feature. GG Steam.

Sounds like you put some download filter setting on. Put cl_downloadfilter all in console. As for no custom models, try cl_minmodels 1

Why exactly are you recommending him to use dual channel? Triple channel is simply better. I'm pretty sure 2x4GB kits would cost alot more too. An 1000W PSU is also overkill, you're never going to need that much power. Corsair and PC Power & Cooling are generally known as the best companies for quality power supplies. Something like the Corsair 850TX would be perfectly fine for him. It's also 110$ cheaper.

Whats your reasoning for going with a gtx 285? Radeon 5870 performs alot better than the gtx 285, supports DX11 and is only 10$ more on newegg.

With as much cash as 2500$ I see no reason to even consider going below a i7, preferably the 920 for the best bang for the buck. i7's are far more future-proof than Phenom II's. For graphics you could probably crossfire some 5870s or just grab a 5970 if you can find somewhere with them in stock. I wouldn't recommend socket 1156 since they're limited to two 8x lanes, which while doesn't really make much of a difference with 2 cards, it definately will in the future. Socket 1366 will also have the new six core gulftown cpu's coming out, which is nice upgradability in the long road.

If you're using Windows 7 Pro / Ultimate you can also take a look at Windows XP Mode if the standard "Run in compatibility for..." doesn't work.

Phenom II should be against Core 2 Quad, not i7. AMD has nothing that competes with the i7.

ATI seem to give more bang for the buck, and they're the only ones with DX11 cards at the moment.
