So your power supply is rated at 500. Your Graphics card alone requires 500w power supply. My guess is, It worked on the 'external build' because you did not hae all the components hooked up, Thus keeping you at around 500w usage. However, when you did the 'internal build' everything is hooked up and requires maybe an extra 50w of power. (fans,dvd drive,network etc..) So in my opinion, ya check all the connections/ what everyone else said first, but I strongly think you don't have a PSU strong enough.
