But that fist HP is running a 1.2GHz processor, that Sony is using a 2.13 core i3. I checked around online and they said that the i3 is better than the other processors that are in your price range. In the long run, that HP will not be to great. I remember running a 1.6GHz cpu and wanting more. Also, that HP doesn't have a dvd drive, so you might need to factor that into the price (about $50) I suggest to just go with the sony, you said up to 500 if it is worth it, well imo, it is worth it, it will last longer, and give a lot better performance with pretty much everything. Boot time, load time for applications, they will all be quicker. Another option is to just get a netbook, I have one and it is perfect for school work.
