Lament & Rejoice
jazzy posted a topic in SG Info & Discussion
When I was banned from here in 2014 it was one of the best things to happen to me. I was surrounded by people who were really not my friends and I myself was an absolute piece of shit. I was a pathological liar to the core and it took many years to untwine that from me and try to start being more honest and fostering healthy relationships. When I got unbanned last year a buddy told me "why would you go back, our lives got way better after we left" and he was completely right. I still don't really know why I came back, maybe boredom, maybe belonging, but I did. Despite that, I've had a really good time and I figured I'd just delve into that because of a recent thread and pop off in discord. About a month ago my dad died and I honestly got pretty crushed by it and kind of thought of going completely off my rocker and walking away from a lot of things in my life and this was one of them. After a very long week of handling the affairs around my dad's death I got back home and was absolutely tired, and I mostly stayed off of here aside from checking in once and a while. A few days after I came back home I got into the flow of participating and playing TTT again and it did wonders for my health and made me realize I had a lot of friends I've made here, not just the ones from back in the day who helped kickstart TTT again, but ones who joined SG while I was away and those who joined after TTT started up, who I've become good friends with and talk almost daily with about various stuff- games, TTT, movies, celebrity drama, manga, anime, life, school, etc. I've enjoyed some 3am conversations with many of you here and trust me, it's always worth showing up to work uber late because of it lol. What I'm really trying to say is I enjoy being here. When I first came back I found it a little unnerving to try and talk with some people, and a lot of my escapades into stuff like CSGO TTT were not meshing, but I've found some good footing and some good circles. I've done things like 1v1 some of the GG'ers, play dumb discord games and various shit games, jump on racist EU CSS ZE servers for laughs, talk ENDLESSLY about manga with people, and so much more I won't bother listing. I couldn't imagine leaving SG because every week I enjoy participating here from a community perspective. I've made friends and lost them in a blink of a year but I wouldn't change a thing. I understand there's skeletons in the closet, drama left unresolved, but that's life in general. On the night my dad died I was with him for 3 hours and I knew it was not looking great and still I lacked the ability to swallow my ego and tell him some things I really wanted to say, and now it's really too late. I don't think any of us here have such a terminal case but I want you to know that it's ok to swallow the ego and let go and reconcile. I have had many imperfect relationships over my 29 years of life and I can tell you my biggest regret is not trying to keep those relationships close. I know that at times it can be hard to bridge those gaps but I hope we can all just be a community and have fun, in more than just CS2 or GMOD TTT. -

I'd have server-talk just be in a #games specific category like today with #gmod-ttt, etc. I would keep the rules pinned as a message because they are posted in the server anyway when you join (such as via motd). List of s ervers is good, there are discord modules/plugins/whatever tf to show active playercount too I would put admin, complaints, appeals, etc in one single junk box. Basically each form would be simply setup differently via the pinned message (much like dom has the pinned message on how to apply for admin today, just add the other "how-to's" in that). The reason I think this is important is channel fatigue. people do not like joining a discord with 500 channels they never use. I would keep suggestions in a different one and have map suggestions roll into that I would recommend against introduce yourself... Just keep it in general imo. Have the join notifications also be in #general, at least until the discord gets more popular and that becomes spammy. Not sure how I feel about all the general channels. I think a good way of looking at it is... be reactive, not proactive. Don't make a movies-tv channel until we see the need for one, such as too much media talk in #general. Forums-- I think we should dump them. For MAJOR events we should have the equivalent of a wordpress (not wordpress please lord) blog on the main website such as when we do mapping competitions and the like, and those can be media relation posts as well. The main landing page should be like so...: It would take me probably 5 hours ish to design something that looks good and has a CMS to post news items. I might need to contract a friend for style points but it would not be bad at all. The main landing page would have the last 1-2 posts of news. The news tab would have all news + archived news The servers tab would have a list of all the servers + games.me stat track, etc Discord would just hotlink to discord.gg/steamgamers Donate would probably need to be redesigned a little but wouldn't take much About tab is probably just https://steam-gamers.net/about/ I forgot sourcebans list maybe that can be in the servers tab. Partners tab can go.... somewhere i guess... I wouldn't keep a staff list on the website. I would leave that in discord. -

Mentioned it in discord but: We have capped TTT ~3 days/wk on average the last month or two and of the dozen or 2 dozen people who have joined discord on here from that, I do not think a single one of them have joined the forums -

We would continue to own the steam-gamers.net domain and can set up a simple redirect to the new domain. Additionally the major issue is steamgamers.com continues to stay up and confuse our playerbase making our community look COMPLETELY dead, in case you haven't noticed, steamgamers.com looks like this: If a user goes to steamgamers.com instead they would anticipate the community is already dead, especially those from pre 2015. Obviously google metrics play a part but at the end of the day we're literally competing with a dead version of ourselves that can confuse players. Not to mention our current domain steam *hyphen* gamers dot net is a really awkward domain. In fact, by most SEO metrics, adding hyphens is almost never preferred and generally lowers your SEO, not even considering a .net in 2023 is a little jank looking as there is more preferably TLD's out there like .gg, if you can't get a good .com. -

Fast and flashy .gg or .dev or .app or .io domain name. It can be an acronym, just keep it short and sweet so it fits in the minimal space we have for our server titles. I want to think more about names but don't have anything just yet... Maybe after this weekend I will drop some ideas It would be nice to have a landing page not be the forums but rather a simplistic page showing our servers, playercounts, and a discord link. I understand the forums are nice and I love forums but it'd be nice to advertise our servers over our forums, especially since our servers & discord see more activity than forums today. I posted it in discord but the old site design but back in the early 2010's we had a much more prominent landing page to show our servers while still blending news/forums activity. I think it's good, at this point, to really just not direct people to the forums (but leave them as a piece of history) and force people quicker into discord. Colors... I have no preference. I just recommend we keep a nice dark tone with lighter highlighting, just like we do today with the forum colorscheme. My only recommendation is using flat graphics rather than gradients/excessive shadings. Most modern web designs typically don't style this way anymore, and tend to choose flat color schemes for simplicity. -

hi all-- ZE will be back in CS2. We have a working server (depending on what valve breaks with each CS2 update*), however there are a few restrictions: 1) You need to run -insecure for your game client (as well as the server on our side) 2) You need to personally import the maps into your cs2 map folder (valve has not given us support for FastDL/Steam workshop download). I will run an event in a week or so for ZE CS2 to join. I am waiting for things to stabilize as every single day the people at work for S2 ZE/ZR have uploaded new code to compile for CS2Fixes, and Valve has been *frequently* updating CS2 which causes issues as well (they already broke metamod once). CS2Fixes as a project has come along nicely and as of writing we finally have a player/admin management system. What we are somewhat missing is working maps. CSGO ZE ported maps to CS2 work, but most of the func_tracktrain entities are really glitchy so you will typically be shot off of a boat or a helicopter, so I'm thinking to try and focus solely on ZM maps for the initial start unless we can find a set of ZE maps. In regards to that- I am evaluating new ZE maps every day. So far I really don't have a great maplist just yet, as most of them have issues, but they are playable to a degree (if you accept dying to some bullshit once and a while :)) So continuing on with that... When Valve releases a way for server owners to deliver maps to clients via fastdl/workshop, and assuming we no longer need to run -insecure, I will host a mapping contest for ZE. This will not a small prize pool, most likely $300 for first place alone. I hope you all can spread the word on this to your friends to start evaluating the new S2 mapping tools and think of ideas for maps. I want to give back to the ZE mapping community and this is a great first step. Thanks all. I am always available on discord to talk more, if you have interest in understanding the current ZR plugin and its state please let me know and I can get you into my playtest server so you can understand where everything is at. Like I said, I want an event, but I need a bit more stability and hopefully at least 1-2 maps that just work totally 90%. -

I think if the BD's can participate in some of the seed days and answer questions people might have, that would be a good in between from having meetings vs having an "open door" policy. It is nice to talk to zt, karma recently. I think a lot of people do join if higher ups are on because sometimes they just want to ask questions (or lay into someone lol) -

not gonna try to respond to everything but- tinychat could happen again xd I think this is a main issue, literally just look at the break down of members who viewed this thread below and you can see very few people who viewed this are "new" to the community, in fact 90% already served many years in the community. i didn't cover it much but the difficulty is even though the surf/retakes/bhop servers might get people they get very little draw to discord. i'm not sure if that's just like a generational thing or not i'm sure there's legit a ton of metrics but i just kind of look at player complaint/admin complaint/appeal bans and it's kind of obvious nobody joins here to appeal their ban at a higher rate these days. we don't even have an admin complaint in 2023, we have 3 player complaints in 2023, and 21 appeal bans. just roughly ballparking it but 2020 had 240 ban appeals. that means we have 11x less people making ban appeals. i can't really think of a more obvious sign that we do not have an influx of people coming here to even appeal their ban. and mind you the 21 appeals this year are partially inflated by goodguys appealing lol I think there's certainly people on surf/retakes/bhop playing games but they're not actually coming on here (discord, forums) so that's part of the problem imo. I know that this point has been covered earlier too It could be done two ways- you could maintain control of the servers and just have people paypal donate, or just relinquish control. I guess I could expand more of where this idea partially came from and it was on a community I was (and still am on) a long time ago they had a forums that hosted multiple different communities and gave them board space for what they wanted. It was a mutual beneficial relationship as the communities overlapped but they still gave them their own space to do whatever they want with the server itself. I thought it was a great idea because it gave owners autonomy while giving them a backend to build stuff without worrying about shit like maintaining forums, irc, or the gameserver hw itself. When I look at SG it seems like they've kind of given more leeway in how server owners handle the server, this was more just an idea to handle some costs. I understand caution said money is no problem but I also wonder if it's necessary for him to pay $3k/yr in the first place. As for "underhanded" you can still have backups to immutable object storage from each server box on a day/week/month backup cycle to low cost storage like wasabi ($6/1tb/mo). there really should never be a cause for concern at this point in terms of people deleting servers off boxes. the only main issue is losing an IP of a server as that can kill a favorites link, so typically that's why you'd want to maintain control of the servers themselves anyway. Not really "omg you guys gotta do this" just something I had on my mind for many moons I thought I'd pass along i'd say this is the major issue, speaking as someone who was a dick back in the day, i think honestly there just needs to be some straightening up in the community which I know has partially happened The best example I can give of this is I'm part of other communities where I'm willing to share more intimate details about myself, pictures of myself, etc. I would almost never, ever share anything more personal here. From what I've heard within a month or two me being back multiple people I had never met already knew details about me that I had not shared before on the forums/discord. It's fairly obvious why people do not want to interact here at times. Just furthering this and don't want to name names here but are a couple people in this community who I share discords with are exactly the same way- far more willing to interact in the other discords and discuss many topics, their personal lives, etc. None of those details are ever shared here edit forgot to add: I had thought about a silly "don't say doxx" rule where if you joke about doxxing someone you can be muted/banned to curb those discussions more heavily. I'll say in the past at some places I've been there have been rules against sharing photos of people without their consent even if they had been posted by the person in that discord/forums before. It was mainly a rule to curb bullying type behavior and trolling. When BoM got perm'd here earlier this year I wasn't really a fan of people sharing his pictures because all this does is enable people and make them think it's ok to do that kind of shit as long as the people they're doing it "deserve it." well then the issue is who "deserves" to be bullied, etc. -

topic replied to jazzy's jazzy in Suggestions Box
oh using my brain i forgot that you probably shouldn't advertise which domains you want to consider because someone is going to nab them so you might just need to make an internal executive decision on which direction makes sense for that. i would choose something short and sweet, preferably easy to type with one hand xd -

Some of these may be controversial that's aight. They're simply my opinion and stuff. I have been on the internet a long time and seen many forums and communities come and go. 1. Backup the data for JB, retakes #2, and CSS GG, and close them. They see no play from what I've seen, maybe retakes a little. gg.steam-gamers.net is the listed server FQDN on the server page and it literally is a dead DNS record. Optics matter, and if someone looks at your server page and sees 80% dead servers, it just looks dumb. Focus on a couple projects rather than spreading thin. 2. Get rid of the $250 (or however much) OVH dedi that sees almost no utilization and move to hosting each server on its own VPS on a provider like Linode/Akamai (or continue using OVH) and have the server owners pay for them. If the owners want to run a server, they can pay for the costs to run it. Whatever money (if there is money left from the haydays) Caution has left should be used for step 3. This is highly controversial and I totally stole this idea from Haggard's spin off community back in 2014. with shared resources like sourcebans just have another server for that with iptables for whitelisting the gameservers to access or use private networking on whatever provider you're using. i partially recommend this because it's easier to size up/size down shit this way btw. also not to stroke my own dick but ten years ago im pretty sure i told you guys to buy the hw and colo somewhere and if you wouldve LISTENED TO ME THAT WOULDVE SAVED WAY MORE MONEY REEEE 3. Buy a new domain that doesn't suck and rebrand. I'm sorry to say this but the day you lost steamgamers.com was the death knell for making this work. steamgamers.com is already a tough domain to run in 2023 (yes, I know you lost it way before 2023) with the amount of whack-ass phish sites, and honestly, it just attracts weird people thinking this is a Steam general help forum. But having a .net and a hyphen makes it progressively harder to retain people, especially when your logo has no hyphen or .net in the actual logo itself, attributing to people not remembering how to actually get to the site too. My 2c is: buy a .io or .dev domain, think of a few cool ideas, and start getting community feedback. Rely on ideas or tributes to our predecessors and positive things. Make it short and sweet and accessible and not weird. Going back to ZombieMurder might be cool, but honestly, almost none of us were even around during that time anyway. It might be time to hit the drawing board on this and consider options, get community input, and move forward. (obviously keep steam-gamers.net and just redirect them to the new site) 4. Engage groups of players instead of individual people to run servers. I think the reason TTT has somewhat worked well is because it's not just one person doing all the work. It is a couple of people, and they lean on each other to revive the server from time to time, and that is what gets the growth. I don't really know/think that TTT has paid off that well for the community in terms of return, but I think part of that is back to #3 among other things. 5. Lean on Flavor of the Month (FOTM) opportunity. It looks like if you do FOTM, it pulls. I use something like Minecraft that came out a year or so ago as an example, which was hot and sexy for a few weeks, and this is going to lean into #6. But just observe trends and build out based on that. New game came out? Try to collect a couple of people to run a server and make that work, preferably someone who WANTS to do it. Once it fizzles, throw it away, that's totally ok!!! 6. Stop trying to do too much everywhere all at once and just do a couple good things and be good at it 6.5. Because 6 was lame I wanted to say stop being omnipotent gods and just get rid of internal discussions about direction or server ideas, just post them publicly and talk about them publicly. Take in community input and work with it and see what sounds cool and what people might like. I literally have no fucking clue what you guys are working on and I promise you nobody is eagerly anticipating a release date on anything you present, just be transparent. If someone gives you shit in a thread don't worry because 90% of the people who would complain at you do not have any interest in seeing this place grow and are merely here to crab bucket mentality you. This plays in heavily to #5 about using flavor of the month and #4 about engaging groups of players to do stuff 7. This is directed at everyone: Stop caring so much about growth, stop being a stick in the mud, stop being an asshole. Just have fun. I know the above were all suggestions to try and grow, but I actually wanted to take a second and level set with you. The reason this community is not flourishing is because it's literally not a community. A community is a group of people with common interest, who work together and share common goals. Half of the community here is literally non stop up someone's ass 24/7. And honestly, for many years SG was the epitome of that and I participated and many others did and still do I think people forget we're here to play games because they're fun, not because it's a side hustle or grind. Few other things that deserve no numbers: Already doing this but just give admin to people who seem OK. You guys basically did it with elfbarf and it worked out fine. I would quit doing perms at this point and just hand out 1yrs which should be enough time to help people get straight and stop doing whatevs. perm for illegal shit is still aight. yes, even hacking can just be a 1yr. chances are they're not hacking a whole ass year later I have some discord ideas but dont want to write them out but tldr just simplify shit and just have general video game channel instead of 20 small ones giving up on grammar shit now really hot take opinions: just get rid of BD's you guys are literally cycling them every 3 months. have the current BD's be with AO's (and TA's who have AO) and have them all just do decisions stop with the community meetings just post on here the ideas and let people discuss. i say this because i can never make that shit lol ill think of more shit -

Thank you Revenga for your work, and Caution glad to have you back again hopefully soon here. Always great chatting with you in discord hah edit; And thank you as well Hawks! Hope to see all 3 of you around still. -
I had a Oculus Rift CV1. Tried a HTC Vive but the weight was crap. Going from a Rift to Quest 2 was mind blowing. My most played, and really only played game, is Eleven: Table Tennis. I do get a bit of motion sickness when using locomotion controls so games where you are not using the nubs to move are what I generally play. Beat Saber as well when I'm a bit more bored. I think games like BeatSaber/E:TT will change the landscape. They can be practice tools and require somewhat limited space in order to play. I will forever own a VR headset in some capacity to be able to play games, and the cost these days is pretty minimal for a great experience IMO. if anyone wants to play Eleven TT with me please hit me up

Wanted to spend a little bit to say how much I appreciate Elf & Huwa for getting the server rolling (and those that came before helping set up things) and all of the others playing TTT weekly to help get populated and get some fun times going. It's been a blast playing TTT again after an entire decade. There had been attempts prior to start it back up in various capacities and I think this was a perfect storm of time/place. For us to be able to pile in ~10 SG people 2-3x a week and get randoms to join in some "vanilla" TTT is really great. Also wanted to shout out the old heads who have stopped by, it has been far too long and it's great to see people still kicking and hearing about their past/present/future. Please feel free to add me on Steam (id/jaz) /Discord(jazzyyk) to stay in touch, I do miss many of you and I'm still sad we have yet to see many faces return yet, but hopefully they will show up some day! And for those who have joined since after perms back in 2014~ I really appreciate you all playing and having a blast. I know some of you come from CSGO TTT or haven't played TTT at all and it's been really fun to meet you all. There are far too many people to name and they do now make up the bulk of our regular base that play. I of course am not leaving or anything at all, I just thought it's best to give a shoutout now, I know these golden times can't last forever, so I'm trying to enjoy it every day I can -
